Ground Instructor Certs
How do I go about obtaining my ground instructor certificates? I will get my CFI, CFII, and MEI but am looking to obtain a ground instructor certificate so I can begin teaching prior to that.

The AGI and IGI ground instructor certificates require a written test only. Get the ASA written test prep book for the certificate you desire, pass the test, and go to your local FSDO for your temporary certificate. Btw, they don't expire or require renewals every two years like the CFI certificate does either.

GI certs are not worth the cost of the written tests unless you
a) Are not getting flight instructor certs and
b) Have a GI job already lined up
Take the money and go to your local bar...better use of your money and time.

Thank you for your response! I have certainly been weighing all the options but what about marketability? I start at ATP in June so I certainly won't be putting them to use there. Is it something that is going to make me competitive or is it a mute point? I also considered taking the FE written but both of my friends who fly for major airlines said don't even take the time to learn the questions unless the airline is asking for it.

The FEX? Have you even seen, in the last year, a plane that requires an FE? FedEx is the only place worth planning on that still requires the written and by the time you can go there their Seven Twos will be gone. Go take the Flight Nav written.

How will GI certs make you more marketable? They have no value added beyond what your CFI certs allow you to do. everybody in the industry knows you get them by taking the exact same tests twice
Maybe if you're free-lance flight instructor...dumb rich guys won't know any better so you can put them on the business card you stick on the FBO bulletin board and it will make it look like you're more qualified than the other CFIs?
