Can a CFI sign off a MCA/MCI applicant?
 

Just curious if a regular CFI/II/MEI can sign off MCA/MCI test takers. My flight school has a CATS testing center and we see 10-12 of these guys per week asking about this.

From the research I did, seems like I just need to have them fill out an IACRA and electronically sign it...?

I always thought the FAA needs to review credentials for the Military Competency exams?

Do they have to be a DPE? I guess that's what I was trying to figure out.

I'm not aware of designated examiners reviewing military flight training records for this particular pathway although it is entirely possible! Whenever you have questions this complex you should refer or contact the local FAA FSDO for guidance!

I work at a flight school where we are about 80% retired military. All of them had to fill out an 8710 online and then setup an appointment with the FSDO. From there they took all their military forms with them, the FSDO reviewed them, and then printed them out a temp certificate.

I can also through this in that if the guy was T-38, F-15, or any multi in the military that was centerline thrust as deemed by the FAA, not the military, they will have that restriction.

I guess there is a local DPE around here that charges people to do it...I was just wondering what he charged them to exactly do if no 3rd party is required.

I did my CFI through the MCI. Took the test without an endorsement and used the Sheppard Air guide to MCI. Made my appointment with the local FSDO letting them know I was going for the MCI. They looked at my DD214 (T34C flight instructor) and gave me a temporary certificate all in 30mins.

Substitute C-130 for T-34, and this was my same experience. Took the test, made a FSDO appointment, took them all the paperwork they said to bring, plus test results, paper temp certificate 20 minutes later. The most painful part of the experience was the 3-hour roundrip drive to the FSDO in Scottsdale.

As far as I remember, no special coordination or permission was required to take the test up front.
