Instruction Given Hours Logged
 

OK, I have heard a few different things on this, so want to see if any one knows the correct answer. If I am doing sim. Instrument work in an FAA approved FTD (I am an II and the lesson is being done for either currency or for an approved lesson to be completed in the sim under my schools 141 syllabus), the student can log it as dual received, but can I log it as Instruction Given?

Nope. Or, yes, under a different column that isn't airplane-dual given that you'd only keep for bragging rights, mostly because no one cares, but possibly a good idea if you want to be a sim-instructor (there are good jobs out there, home every night, etc).

For reasons which will become apparent later in your career..

You want to log all sim received and sim instruction given in separate columns. Someone will be along soon to talk about how level C/D sims are the same as real airplanes, that's BS. You can even keep separate columns for FTD vs. full-motion sim if you like.

Do not mix sim and airplane time. Do not mix sim dual-given in with airplane dual-given time.

It's worth keeping track of sim dual-given because you might need or want a job as a sim instructor some day. Those jobs often pay decent wages and have decent QOL...you also don't need a medical to do it.

(15) Pilot time means that time in which a person -
(i) Serves as a required pilot flight crewmember;
(ii) Receives training from an authorized instructor in an aircraft, flight simulator, or flight training device; or
(iii) Gives training as an authorized instructor in an aircraft, flight simulator, or flight training device.

The "BUT" is notice that the definition is for pilot time (stuff I'm underlining are defined in the FAR) not for flight time. Flight time requires an aircraft and even the best sim is not an aircraft.

As the others said, because of this you always want to log sim time in its own column. If you think that the sim instruction given would be valuable for something (like an instructional position) then by all means log it, but keep it separate from your flight time entries.

(btw, that also goes for the student logging it as dual received. It should be kept separate.)

(Just an FYI - the FAR doesn't require the logging of instruction given)

You may want to log it as others have said in some type of different column. You may need that time later on as Rick indicated for a sim instructor job or to meet Asst. Chief or Chief instructor requirements for instrument dual given requirements.
