This is the case at most places that do contract international training. The contracts almost always specify some sort of duration, whereas with domestic students it's all depend on the pace the student is comfortable with.

I believe he is asking if USAA hires its own international students who complete the CFI Ratings.

I am looking to start flight training with zero experience and I am looking at finding a school where I can be rehire after getting CFI. This just makes the whole job hunt much simpler after spending all that time and money getting our licences.

I have emailed Ms Whittington about it but she never gave me a reply. I am from Singapore but I can speak Chinese and English fluently so handling Chinese students will not be a problem.

Any insights on that, hiring of their own international graduates?

Default Equipment/books needed for Students

I'm starting classes with TCC this coming fall semester. I'm trying to build my flight bag, but I need to know what books and equipment I need to purchase. Also, what iPad would anyone recommend I buy?

You will have to ask TCC about the books and such they require but I know many of our students like the iPad mini because its about the size of a typical knee board.

I fly out of a school in Houston, but here's my take. On the Ipad question, I like the size of the Mini, and started with the first gen one, but I find that the Air is more useful. This is because the screen size of the Air is a lot closer to paper which makes a big difference when reading PDFs and viewing approach plates. It's not too much larger on the knee board (I use a zero g type knee board which is simple and not clunky like the Sportys tri fold type ones: Kneeboard 9G Plus [36801813] - $30.95 : Wings Aviation Products, field manuals, pathes, flight gear, military needs and more!).

As for wifi and size, I'd recommend a minimum of 32 gb and a cellular model for the built in GPS capability. I've used an external GPS, but to a lot handier to have it built in and works well enough in Foreflight. Note that you never have to use a data plan, but if you get a T-Mobile sim you can take advantage of their free 200 MB monthly data which is a good backup for Foreflight if you're out of wifi range.

I'm glad you mentioned that getting the cellular model. We do require the cellular model because they have to have a GPS which our app uses.

Question???? I am seriously considering getting my cfi, cfii and meI for $7500 here in tennessee. My question...Is it worth the investment because I have figured that it will pay for itself after about 375 hours of flying at the rate of 18-20 dollars an hour I am expecting to make. I will be willing to move to the DFW or Florida areas. I am trying to build some time the next 2 years after my atp written. thanks.

It certainly possible to get 1000 hours in a year with a decent weather and hard work.

I worked there for half a year, and left some time ago. I flew about 50 hours per month, sometimes 80. The pay was survivable for a single person during some weeks. Other times barely manageable.
