Talking WAYs to get a CFI ticket?

Good evening all,

I am currently a low time pilot looking to get a CFI. I read on this forum that American Flyers in Santa Monica is not a smart move for your wallet. I was wondering if anyone knows of any other FBO in Santa Monica that they could recommend for a CFI ticket (More affordable than AF, of course). Basically, if you were in my shoes.. what would you do to get your CFI..? Thanks for help everyone!

All ATPs. 14 days and you are done.

Once you get to 150 hours and meet the requirements. Get a Light Sport Airplane instructor rating (CFI-S) and instruct for 100 hours, then get CFI. Saves you a lot of money.

I noticed that the only location atp does the cfi training near LA is in Las Vegas. Unfortunately I dont have the resources to go out there and train. Anywhere near LA you know of that does CFI training?

While most of their programs are way overpriced, their CFI academy is actually a good deal because of the classroom format they use. You will need more flight time than is built into the package, but if you are proficient on ASEL commercial maneuvers it shouldn't be too much over.

If you can't travel, they are as good as anyone else in LA. But ask some current students, everybody I knew there has long since moved on.

I would do this IF the FAA would allow the hours to count toward the PPL. I think it would be hard to find students who are just wanting a sport pilot.

I'm lucky to be in a club where we sold 100's of groupon flights. But you're right, has there been any news regarding this? Last I heard it may be overturned soon.

There has been some talk about re clarifying the regulation, but nothing solid. I'm still not sure why the FAA would think that a CFI-S teaching someone the first 20 or so hours is any different than a regular CFI, but its the government.

Be advised the 14 day idea works only if you are already well prepared. AllATPS CFI program should be considered a quick finishing school, the icing on the cake as it were. Do your larger iceberg of preparation before arriving. I have seen smart people go in thinking "this will be an easy CFI in two weeks" and bounce out minus their dough. If you report almost already done, then it should go okay and actually be helpful. They do have a certain momentum you will not be able to catch unless you go in fairly well prepared.

Got it. So American Flyer's 30 day program for both CFI-A and CFII shouldn't be as quick as ALL ATP.. but I should still do most of the studying before I get in. Sounds good, I think I will check out AF in a couple of days to see what they are all about.. maybe sit in on a class if they allow. Would you say $5,000 should be enough.. including the extra hours I might need and the checkrides.. since its probably going to be a DPE in California?
