Default Question on Multi-Commerical XC requirements

According to 61.129(b) I need

- 2hr Day XC 100NM min leg
- 2hr Night XC 100NM min leg
- 300NM total w/ landing at three points, with one leg 250NM.

Can I combine all three XC's into one trip? For example:

KHPN to KAUG (260NM) - 2hr DAY
KAUG to CYHU (267NM) - 2hr DAY
CYHU to KSWF (243NM) - 2hr Night
KSWF to KHPN (32NM)

The whole itinerary meets the 300NM w/ three points. And the first three segments are all 2hr legs.

Its been a little while since reviewing commercial requirements for students and correct me if i'm wrong, but the two 2 hr xc's are dual. 1 long dual xc in the daytime and the other at night. The 300nm w/ 3 points was a solo. No difference for multi vs single i believe.

We used to do the 2hr/100 miler in one leg timed to land just before sunset. Get out stretch, whatever, turn around and fly back at night. Both dual x/c done. The long one is a solo trip.

According to 61.129(b) (4)

(4) 10 hours of solo flight time in a multiengine airplane or 10 hours of flight time performing the duties of pilot in command in a multiengine airplane with an authorized instructor (either of which may be credited towards the flight time requirement in paragraph (b)(2) of this section), on the areas of operation listed in §61.127(b)(2) of this part that includes at least—

(i) One cross-country flight of not less than 300 nautical miles total distance with landings at a minimum of three points, one of which is a straight-line distance of at least 250 nautical miles from the original departure point. However, if this requirement is being met in Hawaii, the longest segment need only have a straight-line distance of at least 150 nautical miles; and

(ii) 5 hours in night VFR conditions with 10 takeoffs and 10 landings (with each landing involving a flight with a traffic pattern) at an airport with an operating control tower.

--------------------------

Solo or dual PIC for 300NM / 3 points... I already have private multi so all DUAL will be PIC anyway. Am I missing something here?

The above is correct but also remember you can do the dual XCs while doing your instrument training after the change in the wording of the regs. a couple years ago.

I learned to fly out of KHPN! What's your story? Is there a school there with a multi or does it belong to a private owner?

Good luck - looks like some serious flying!

Dual is described as being "flight training." So you will have to have an instructor sitting in with you. Solo is just you and the airplane. Plus, why would you want to pay for dual.

Like you said, you'll be logging PIC regardless but this has nothing to do with PIC.

This is basically your answer^^. You can not combine "dual" and what I put in bold above. Its either or but "not" both at the same time!

My story is that I started flying in December 2011 and since then I have accumulated 245 hours fixed wing, 40 hours rotor and have my single & multi private and instrument. Working on my commercial multi, then commercial single add-on, then finish my rotor private then rotor commercial. Then I am done.

The DA42 twin is a leaseback plane based out of Millionaire FBO and operated by Performance Flight. I did all private & instrument training at Performance Flight in a Cirrus SR20.

Today I banged out my Commercial multi long XC. Went from KHPN to KBUF to KELM to KMSV to KHPN.

They changed the regulation in 2010. The 300 mile X-Country can be done with a CFI on board. Supposedly the change was needed because of insurance regulations regarding solo flights in certain complex & multi engine airplanes. Not really buying the justification, but there was also lots of talk about removing the complex aircraft requirement entirely, so maybe it was a trade-off to keep the complex requirement
