Stupid currency question IFR
 

ok so if you are doing some practice approaches with a saety pilot, are you required to get the safety pilots certificate number?

i recall that you are because i was asked evertime i flew safety pilot

Well, yes and no... It depends, how much attention from the FAA do you draw? Are you planning on gearing up/crashing an aircraft anytime soon? :D


P.S. If you need some incidents/accidents on record, hire on at Everts Air Cargo:eek:. Spend a minimum of 5 years and you will not be disappointed. :cool:

I'm not 100% sure it's required, but honestly it's a good idea. CFI's have to put their cert number in any teaching scenario, so with safety pilot work.......looks like the reasoning is the same.

Check your handy dandy FAR/AIM, or if I get time and bored I might try and find it.

Reg the reg. Only the pilots' name is required. Certificate number is not. If you want to add his certificate number, date of birth, address, phone number, email address, hair color and sexual preference, go right ahead. But the FAA only requires his name.

My cert # is still my SSN. I would not want that in someone elses' book. I guess I need to request a new cert #.

Well, since it doesn't need to be in someone else's logbook, you don't really "need" to.

But it sounds like you might still have a paper certificate since when the FAA started issuing plastic they stopped using SSN's.

If that's the case, you might not be aware that all paper pilot certificates must be replaced. Fortunately, if the request for a new certificate includes a request to get rid of your SSN, there's no charge.

No it's plastic, issued in 2004. I think I hopped on the FAA plastic bandwagon before SSN's became such an issue.

Update: Just requested a new certificate with the SSN removed via faa.gov. It was free.

You can pay the FAA $2 for a new certificate and request that your social security number be removed and they will issue you a new certificate number.

Although not required I recommend it. The reason I recommend it is because if the FAA does do a long book review that at least has more credibility that some one's name that could've just been penciled whipped in. At ATP we always logged the certificate numbers, also make sure you don't log actual IMC time as you are suppose to be under the hood. We had a bunch of guys get in deep doo doo with the examiners are on that one. To save yourself the trouble always remember you are both PIC's but the safety pilot can't log anything but TT and PIC time. Every thing else would be credited towards the PF who is acting as PIC.

Highly recommend having the safety pilot's cert. number in your book. For example, what if your safety's name was John Smith? Guess how many John Smiths there are. It is a good idea for CYA. Also, FAA still issues certs. with SSN on it. Everytime I get a new one (CFI) they ask me if I want to change it, I have not as of yet. That's just me.
