Timing of a CFI Renewal

Timing of a CFI Renewal
Getting ready to renew my CFI through the American Flyers online course (highly recommended btw). And I just want to check my understanding of 61.197 so that I can keep my expiration month the same.
My CFI expires April 30th. May I begin the online course now (December, 2012), complete it in January (2013), and make an appointment at the FSDO anytime before the end of April, 2013?
I did this four years ago, and was lectured by the FSDO inspector about how I "was taking advantage of the regulation." Two years ago, a different inspector (same FSDO) thanked me for renewing early. I am just curious if the rule or interpretation has changed, and what guys and gals are experiencing now. TIA.

Thanks Josh, I'll probably complete the course in early February for that reason. Though the previous two times I completed the course in January, I did receive my renewals which validated my interpretation. Has the regulation changed?
Anyone have a concern over beginning the course now (December, 2012), and completing it in the "three months preceeding my expiration month?" In other words, can you start the course too early?

Well, I may have partially answered my own question:
The American Flyers FIRC website asks you for your CFI certificate number and expiration date when you apply to begin the course. I entered 04/30/12 and it said that I could not begin the course because the "expiration date can be no more than 3 months in the future." It will not let you start early.
I'll try again in January and see if they interpret "three calendar months preceeding the expiration month" as being able to begin the course four months prior to the expiration date. If not, this is definitely a change in interpretation/policy as I have copies of completion certificates with January dates.
This is what I get for not procrastinating...

The company that makes the software can do whatever they want. If it won't let you start, that's not the FAA, that's the software. If you're more than 3 months from the "grace period" thing, you can still renew, just not on that original date of expiration. Sounds like a software bug.

The last 3 times I've used Jepp. I'm due in June. I'd buy the course in December of the prior year for the tax write off. Do 2 or 3 lessons a month till May and send send all the paperwork the first part of June.

Hey, at least you maintained it. Nice! I know several who let theirs lapse and they regret it big time.
