Does DPE really matter?

another instructer here last spring sent 10 applicants for varying checkrides (IA through multi comm). confident in every one of them, and to 3 different examiners.
9 failed their initial, and she got to chat with someone from FSDO.
sometimes your student brainfarts on the checkride, and there's nothing you can do about it. that's what i meant by signing away your CFI with every applicant.

I agree. My first signoff failed on a brainfart. The DPE he used was my suggestion. Everybody since then has done fine. The flight school I used to work at used a number of DPEs. I knew the strenghts and weaknesses of each one, discussed this with my students and rather than doing the same thing I did with the first student, I just told them what I knew about each DPE and let them make the choice. Regardless, I made sure they were ready regardless of who was sitting next to them examining.
However, a 90% failure rate says something about the quality of instruction. If 90% of my students failed the first time I'd be considering an alternate carreer path. I'd also be thinking about my upcoming 709.

Thanks everyone. I havent mentioned it to him yet since I am only at lesson 12 with my first stage check for the rating on tuesday. I will talk to him about it though when the time is right in a professional way instead of just a "hey by the way..."
I agree though and after a few endorsements and ratings I do believe that my instructor is an "employee" seeing that it is my dollar paying him and I should have some say in certain aspects of my training (not a cocky statement, I understand some aspects are not flexible). If the instructor refused I would probably just do the ride with his DPE because I am confident in my abilities and know that I can pass with whoever, I would just prefer to go with who I want. We have a good connection and have spent a few hours together and it is a less stressful atmosphere.
