Looking for Flight Schools in New York area
 

Good morning all! This is my first post as I recently joined the forums (long time lurker).

I'll be moving to New York probably in about 6 months and I need advise on flight schools around the Queens area. I've been doing some research over the internet, and it looks like my airport options are: Republic (Farmingdale) and Westchester (White Plains). Long Island Mac Arthur (Islip) would be a little too far.

I'm already a Private Pilot ASEL with Instrument rating, building time towards my Commercial, then planning to instruct, so a school with the possibility to instruct with them is a most.

Republic has some schools, as does Islip. Islip has a ATP location, but prices are adjusted for the area opposed to other locations. Let me know if you would be interested in splitting some time. I am also in the area working towards instrument and eventually commercial.

What school are you? Off course I'll be interested in splitting time.

I am a former SUNY, at FRG, CFII, MEI from Huntington....taught at FRG. It's a great airport, I preferred it over ISP,...too busy there.

Brookhaven is a great short flight from FRG, uncontrolled, with great access.

Lots of great flying on LI.

I grew up in Queens, Middle Village and used to drive to FRG.....

I did my training for my private at American Flyers as MMU. I am planning to do my instrument at Greenwood Lake. PM to talk more about splitting time.

How far is the practice area from FRG?

I did my training at HPN. Great place to learn and instruct. The only problem is that I don't think any school there has a complex or multi. Check it out anyway!

You should definitely check out Panorama at HPN. Not sure if they have a multi, but I did some complex work there in their 182RG. It's a very nice facility and their planes are very well maintained. I had very good luck with the instructors that I used and got along well with the management there. You just have to know that you will be paying an arm and a leg per hour. I did most of my training in the Midwest, but there is definitely something to be said about training in the busy NY airspace. Good luck with your move out there!

Thanks for the info flyflieg. I will defenitely check them out. As for renting airplanes I'm kind of used to pay an arm and a leg. Where I rent them, they are more expensive (based in comparison with what is published in their web page) but the instructor p/h rate is half their price.

Is the training area far from the airport? Normally, how long will you be on the ground before receiving your takeoff clearance? I know NY airspace is busy.

Sorry for the delay in my response. Usually for takeoff/landing practice they like to go to Bridgeport, CT (which is about a 10-15 minute hop in the Cessnas). The actual practice areas are obviously northwest to northeast of the field because of NYC south of the airport. Typically when I would taxi out it would take anywhere from .2-.4...unfortunately with the airline and corporate jets flying in, you become a little bit less "important" to tower, but the tower people have always been very friendly and helpful!
