anyone flying air ambulance?
PLane of course. Just wondering if there are any of you outthere
I spoke to an airambulance pilot that graduated from my college's flight program. He flies a kingair in and out of St George and salt lake city. Makes a well rounded 6 figure salary in his mid 30s. Built time as a fire bomber too. Which is really strange for time building. Wonder how long he flight instructed for.
Gets a 14 day on and 14 off on call work day.
But anyway, seemed like an interesting guy. it just depends on where you go and who you work for! there is money out there for all those that complain!

Not flying ambulance presently, but I flew it in King Airs, Learjets, Senecas, Turbo Commanders, etc.
I've never heard of anyone "building time" doing firefighting. He might be leading you on. 100 hours is a good year...how many years did he "build time?" He left firefighting to go fly ambulance?
There are some good ambulance outfits out there. The SGU airplane used to be a great contract. Probably still the same company; they were a gold standard outfit. There are a lot of others that are ones to stay far, far away from. Six figures is very good for ambulance...and very unusual.

I currently fly ambulance on citations. It is an unusual schedule but not too bad. The feeling from helping people makes up for the schedule some. 6 figures seems kind of high for just a king air captain, at least where I am from. Maybe he was the chief pilot?

air ambulance as a Lear and king air pic. yah, weird schedules, 10-15 minutes to make go no go decisions, flight plan, call to fuel, get dressed, make coffee, drive to the airport.
not for everyone.

There is no operator in the CONUS making six figures on a King Air...Unless of course he was a DO or CP also... There is the possibilty that a large portion of his paycheck was per diem.. Which ups the daily rate and ultimately the take-home pay.. But his W-2 would not show six figures...
Were his initials I.S.? Or J.B?
Air ambulance is not a bad way to make a living. It does have it's advantages. Typically lots of at home time. Few actual duty hours worked depending on the company.
Disadvantages are those days when you get multiple patients, long duty days. Usually flying to remote, mountaneous places. Or those dreaded weeks when the calls keep coming in at 2 a.m.
It's a good badge of honor to say you've been there done that. But doing it for a 30 yr. career

I fly air ambulance and it is defiantly a fun job. My company has "manned base" of the fixed wing side so lots of time sitting at the airport watching tv. Almost no way to do it is with netflix.
As for the 6 figures he must be counting the cents at the end of his pay checks. But if you are willing to live in MT you can make 70k.
