Last week a buddy of mine works at Transpac and he told me they needed 30 instructors hired in 4 days to make the quota of new students coming over....

I have 1300 hours I'm still instructing ( at a school with many foreign students) and I should be able to interview somewhere by the end of the year. But honestly I might just stay and see what happens with all these regionals combining and not to mention new work rules.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?!!!!
If what you say is true, your FSDO rep is basically an idiot, or maybe you heard them wrong. Also,

Doesn't anybody read my signature? There were 8,651 NEW commercials issued last year. Where does this *nonsense* come from?

I think that blast of shortage pieces in the "mainstream" news actually has gotten people pretty fired up about this job sector. Way to go Roger Cohen, et al.

Those numbers were for the one FSDO I'm sure. On the other hand I would say 80% or better of those almost 9000 issued last year are not staying in the US. Almost every big school still in business is full of non US citizens.

Therein lies the big question...how many are "in the market" for a job in the US? Don't forget some come here intending to return home, but end up flying here instead. I know of a few myself.

I still really believe at this point in time our pilot pipeline has changed from an absolute *glut* of pilots to a more....shall we say reasonable amount?

The FAA hasn't come out with the final ruling of the 1500 hr requirement correct?

Congress passed a law requiring all 121 pilots to hold an ATP. That's a done deal starting August 2. They also said the FAA can change the reguirements to get an ATP. The FAA has floated a NPRM about that but nothing final.

I figured that at the very last moment - give a few days, the FAA will relax the 1500 to 1000, and less for accredited schools and military. Good video post as well..

There were 8,550 commercial certificates issued in 2011........I don't have last year but that is an oft-repeated lie, even from people at the FSDO. It's stupid.

Ok folks, 2013 data is out. I posted (some) 2012 data to the right for comparison. Sorry about the look of my post. Feel free to look this up yourself to make sure what I am seeing is accurate;
Original Certificates issued,

Year 2013.....................2012

Student---- 49,566 ...... .............54,370

Recreational---- 54

Sport---- 420

Private ---- 15,776 .................... 16,571

Commercial---- 8,140 .................... 8,651

ATP---- 8,346 .....................6,396

Rotorcraft---- 2,888

Glider ---- 163

CFI ---- 3,723 ................. ...4,116

Instrument ---- 9,318 .....................9,643

P.S. I was wrong in my prediction that there would be more commercials issued in 2013 than in 2012.

This makes sense obviously ATP increased due to increased requirements to have an ATP for working for an airline. I think the commercial licenses decreased and will decrease slightly more this year due to discouragement to pursue a career in aviation, due to the new 1500 hr rule and increased price in flight training. I am just starting out and probably would not have pursued the career without family financial assistance. I told some of my friends about the recent changes and prices to learn to fly and it blew their minds away. On top of their college loans there is no way they could pony up at least another $50,000 in debt for multiple years of low pay instruction and regional FO pay
