Where you really see the decline is new CFI certificates, especially when being a CFI is the most logical way to build time.

About a 25% drop year over year.

The Commercial won't really indicate the best because there are also foreign pilots receiving Commercial Certificates, and the ATP uptick will probably be constant throughout the next 2-3 years followed by a drop to what a normal level will be. But the CFI is the best indicator of career track pilots, for the time being.

Very true, although I know of some foreign commercial student that also get the cfi to build some hours and go back to their countries which will shadow the true cfi staying in in the States. But, the amount is probably between 2-3% percent of the foreign pilots.

It's actually a drop of 400 people out of 4100 CFIs issued last year... So year over year there is a decrease in new CFIs, but a greater proportion of new commercial certificates are getting CFIs

You can bet that if it gets rough, the airlines will come up with some magic like they did in the 60's.

They will do whatever they can get away with, prior to parking too many airplanes. For a very short time in the early nineties, at least one major took pilots with high school diplomas.
