Number of new CPLs (comm licenses)!!
I renewed my CFI with my local FSDO the other day. My FSDO rep told me about this apparent "shortage" He said that last year 2012 the FAA handed out 321 CPL licenses last year. THAT'S IT!!!! included in that are the overseas students here training and going back once they are done.
Last week a buddy of mine works at Transpac and he told me they needed 30 instructors hired in 4 days to make the quota of new students coming over....
I have 1300 hours I'm still instructing ( at a school with many foreign students) and I should be able to interview somewhere by the end of the year. But honestly I might just stay and see what happens with all these regionals combining and not to mention new work rules.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?!!!!

The FAA shows 116,400 estimated active commercial certificates in use last year, and 145,590 active ATP certificates for the same time. (http://www.faa.gov/data_research/avi...Air01-2012.xls)
Shortage? No.
Active Flight Instructor certificates in 2012? 98,328.
If we get any fewer, clearly aviation will die on the vine.
Or not.

Don't believe that hype. That number is a total lie unless it is just at their FSDO. Think of all the flight schools in Florida and Arizona alone. At Transpac, they will send AT LEAST 200 students through CPL!! University program attendance is on the rise. So, to put out 1,000 students per year to cover attrition from retirements and eventually working down the food chain is totally feasible. Especially with all the false impressions the industry slums out.
I personally can't wait to see everyone running around though. It's a long time coming for everyone. However, they will find a way to bring in pilots from other countries, just to save a dollar. That is the problem with the free market today. No loyalty in companies anymore, all they see is dollar signs.
There was a good video on the pilot shortage explained and the value of pilot pay posted just a couple days ago.

I hope aviation does not "die on the vine" so many people speak of doom and gloom. What is for sure is that the shortage is really just of people who wont work for such low wages...
Not to mention training costs to get to 1500 grow every year.
