Quick question about new ATP rule
 
I haven't been able to find this anywhere as it's a pretty specific question, something that i just don't understand.

As I see it, anyone flying for pay with pax will be required to have the ATP. My question is this, if you join a p.121 will they expect you to have the ATP cert before you apply or will they train you and give you the ATP cert? Will they cover the costs? I'm sure it all depends upon the airline, right?

I do not know of a single domestic first officer job that requires an ATP prior to applying, only the ATP flight time minimums and written exam are required so far. That may change in subsequent years if the pilot shortage fails to materialize. The reason is probably tied to the fact that an ATP exam can be cheaply dovetailed with initial flight training at the given airline, and it does not cost much.

Typically this is not a huge barrier because you have to get a type ride usually to work for a carrier, which is almost an ATP ride, and it's already done to ATP standards. If it's a fairly large organization it's not too many additional steps for them to put you through the ATP. What most of them DO want is the ATP written done in the time-span that makes it valid.

At OO when this came down they provided all current F/O's an ATP ride when they cam back around for recurrent training last year. As for new hires the last I had heard was they just wanted the written test and minimums as they could handle the rating on the same type ride you would have to take to get to IOE anyway. Again we haven't hired in a few months, and are just getting ready to start classes again so I'm not sure what the standards are now. I can get a hold of a couple friends on the interview team and ask if you can't find a better answer.
