Part 142 Instructor: Do you need a CFI?
 

I read Part 142 and cannot find anything that says you need a CFI to instruct at a 142 training facility. Am I missing anything? I was told some time ago that for instruction in jets, you don't need one.

A 142 school waves their magic wand and you is one, at least for their purposes. 142 does say you need a CFI if you're going to instruct in an aircraft but that's very rare in the 142 world. If you're instructing leading to a commercial rating you just need to meet the experience requirements for a commercial, if training for an ATP the instructor has to meet the experience requirements for an ATP. In theory you could have a 1600 hour private pilot play G 5 instructor. I don't know how it is now, 20 years ago FSI would hire you as an instructor without any time in type. Simuflite was always big on saying "Our instructors have time in type."

The ATP can give instruction (without a CFI) only within the scope of 121 (or 135) operations. So a 121 sim instructor or LCA does not need a CFI if he is a current captain on that equipment (he does not have to be on the seniority list, that's irrelevant).

I think the language also allows him to teach other airline pilots being trained at a 142 outfit, if he completes the airline's training program.

But he cannot teach primary students in a 172 at the local patch on his days off...he needs a CFI for that, an ATP is a not a carte blanche substitute for the CFI. He also cannot teach a non-airline pilot.

But to actually get hired at a 142 outfit would most likely require a CFI or previous 121 sim instructor experience.

Does anyone other than Riddle do training in the aircraft in 142, out of curiosity?
