Default CFI or CFII as the initial?

Hi everyone, I just finished up my Commercial single, and had a great CFI and I loved every minute of commercial. I also know most of the knowledge, although I didn't enjoy instrument as much because I had an awful CFI. Plus my knowledge for instrument is not as good as my Commercial knowledge. Every flight school around here (Daytona beach, FL) area is recommending the II first rather than the I for the initial, Kinda caught in a pickle. What does everyone think is the best route to take, also does anyone in the Daytona beach area recommend a good flight school?

Thanks- Ryan

Personally, I'd do whichever one I was more confident on about the material. For me personally, I was more confident with instrument material and flying, and did the CFI-IA as the initial. There are a lot of schools in the Daytona area. I did my CFI ratings at Air America, but things change so quick down there, it's hard to say unless you're local. It's been a few years since I've flown there.

Hi,

With only a II, not sure if you can even teach anyone without at least private license. Maybe someone can refresh my memory on this........

Since the vast majority of your students are going to be primary, going the CFI-A route would seem the way to go.

For me, I averaged 1 instrument student for every 15-20 primary.

If you're doing both in short order anyway, I would say go for the CFI-I first...it's a little more cut and dried and an easier way to knock out that initial CFI ride.

A CFI-IA can't teach anything in an airplane until they hold the appropriate CFI-ASE or CFI-AME.

Correct, also, if you do CFII first you don't have to teach BAI when you do CFI-airplane. That's why people do it, works out ever so slightly cheaper.

I think the FAA went off the deep end with that ruling...I knew several guys who had only a CFII and did IPC's as a hobby. The FAA never had a problem issuing CFIIs to people who had no CFI-A so obviously there was an implied intent that you could use it. It had been that way forever, what changed?

The FAA changed 61.195 back in 2009. They made it so that you have to have both class & category ratings on both the pilot certificate and flight instructor certificate.

If youre going to get them in quick succession (I did 3 checkrides in 2 days), do CFII, MEI, then CFI. That gets the most out of it with the lowest amount of flight time and cost. And simplifies the checkrides....

I know they did, I'm just not sure why.
