Default Regional Crew Bases

Are you more likely to be based in a city if you already live there? For example, if I live in Orlando, and I am hired by Comair, could I expect to be based out of Orlando, or does that not really matter due to seniority? Thanks for the help.

Seniority rules my friend.

As the previous post states, seniority does rule. However, on initial hire, it is more about which domiciles need staffing at the time. So, unfortunately they don't take any account as to where you live. Most people in my new hire class (at Skywest) were from Salt Lake City but ended up getting based out of Fresno, even though that's where the company's HDQ is.

That’s very true. I should have been more specific. When given a choice seniority does rule.

Many airlines place their new-hires where they are needed and don’t allow new-hires to "bid" for base, even if more than one base is being staffed from within a single new-hire class.

Ok, thanks for the help there. So now that that question is answered...any advice on how to covince the wife that we probably won't be able to live in Orlando for a couple years? What about commuting? I'm leaning pretty strongly toward ExpressJet or one of the Delta Connections (Comair or ASA), any comments or observations on their commuter policies? Thanks so much for all the help.

I’ve been a commuter for most of my career. My advice is live where you’re happy. No base is permanent no matter how large it is. In other words, you might move to Chicago because your airline has a big base there and two years later, your airline closes Chicago. Now you either have to move again or commute from a city you never wanted to live in to begin with.

Delta used to have a huge base in DFW…not any more. USAirways used to have a huge base in Pittsburgh…not anymore. ACA used to have a big base in ORD…not anymore. Trans States used to have a big base in JFK…not anymore. And then there’s all of the airlines that are now defunct. Eastern, Pan Am, etc. See my point?

Nothing is forever and never say never. There are only two bases in the industry I can think of that have an above average chance of remaining bases for the very long term…SDF for UPS and MEM for FedEx.
