Time Sharing
Three questions on sharing/logging time with another pilot, specifically for 'simulated IFR flying'. I am basing my understanding of this off the link below from the FAA, and FAR/AIM info.
1) is the stated info correct? 2) a flight instructor at a local school stated it is correct, BUT only the 'manipulator of the controls' can log it as xc time as well, however I do not see anything backing that statement up? 3) assuming you have two very money motivated individuals that don't mind wearing foggles, you could use this method to accumulate a lot of hours at half the rental cost? A link from the FAA states: "Normally, a safety pilot, required by regulations, who scans for traffic for a pilot flying under simulated instrument conditions is not pilot-in-command and thus logs second-in-command. However, if the two pilots agree that the safety pilot is designated pilot-in-command, the safety pilot/pilot-in-command may log PIC since he is the pilot responsible for the operation and safety of the aircraft. The pilot flying is "sole manipulator of the controls for which the pilot is rated"" and may also log PIC. Therefore, two private pilots may log PIC under these conditions." |
Your instructor is right.. I was asked the same question during my CFI with the FDSO about loging safty pilot time and both loging pic. You both can log PIC but only the one that LANDS can count the XC time. Remeber that XC time requires a Take off and landing at an airport grater then 50nm for ratings other then the ATP. You both cant count the T/O and landing so you both dont get the XC time. The inspector said she has to throw out hours all the time becuse of this common mistake..

Thanks CommancheGuy. From the inspectors attitude were you able to gather if she would be concerned about 100 "shared" PIC hours. Not that I am going to do that much, but 100 hours at $100/hr, that could save $5,000...pretty substantial.

Dual pic hours
She was not a very understanding and seemed proud that she threw out the ours . Keep in mind that the pilot under the hood requires that he name his safty pilot in his log. the safty pilot does is not required to write safty pilot time or to name the person he was safty pilot for..

Thank you.
