Commercial Knowledge Exam Grade Matters?
 

Just wondering if any potential employers ask what your knowledge exam grades were. I've just finished the Jepp Commercial prep guide, and deciding whether to pony up for Sheppard and try for perfect, or just take the test already!

I've never heard of it for the commercial. Sometimes they ask your ATP written score but that's usually for the guys with just the written done and no ATP. And as long as you have a passing grade I don't think they really care, they just want you to have the ATP written done. The good news is the commercial written and flight is probably the easiest tests you will take, besides multi add on.

I made an 86 on my ATP written, had the same concerns, and debated retaking. When I sat for my check ride, the DPE said "good score" and filed the results with his paperwork. Nothing else was said. I wouldn't worry about it :)

Regionals may want to know what you made on the ATP written as part of the prerequisite list for applicants without an ATP. It helps to have something good I guess, but with all the rote memory and answer memorization going on I doubt they take it too seriously.

I have never been asked what I got on any written. The farthest it ever got is I have had a few apps that have asked if you have failed any written test that is all.

Grade always matters. It was a while ago that I took mine, do they still print out the entire bank of questions? The grade shows your dedication.

A pass is all that matters. Just take it. No airline will care about your commercial written. Focus more on passing the practical.

I was always told, when going through flight school, that the grades only matter when it comes to how in depth the oral portion of the practical would be. Turned out not to be true, at least with the DPE's in the area. I knew people who barely passed and people who aced the written. No one seemed to ever have a more difficult oral than the last, regardless of the written score.

As for jobs asking what you scored on it I would have to say there's a fat chance of being asked. My opinion is that if you have a job that only requires a commercial certificate, and you have it, what difference does it matter what you scored on a written however many years ago. Same goes for an ATP.

Nobody cares about your written test score if you have your tickets. The only way they'll ask to see your ATP written is if you don't have your ATP (in which case they very well might question your low score in the same manner they would question a low GPA.)

If knowledge testing is part of their interview process, you'll get to take a test (oral and/or written) from a question bank that isn't published for everyone to see ahead of time. (Which is why the ATP written is a useless indicator of real knowledge since everyone knows you can memorize the test bank--and no excuse to score less than 95 IMO.)
