The 777 and the 787 are different types. The FAA has guidelines as to what requires a different type, mainly systems commonality and handling characteristics. The Super DC-3 is a different type than a regular Three. Servo tabs make if fly nicer, a taller tail and limited rudder make it worse in a cross wind. Ergo, separate types. Douglas must have learned something, the Six and Seven are one checkride and all the Nines, -10 through -90 are one type.
