Default Post 9/11 GI bill for flight training

I am an 8 year AF vet about to get off of active duty as a C130 FE and taking a reserve gig as a C5 Engineer. I currently have a PPL w/instrument. My question is how far will my GI bill get me in my flight training career path? So far I've used it to attain my instrument rating. Im not using it in conjunction with a college but am working on an aviation related BA using my AF tuition assistance.

If you use it through a college it can pay for commercial, multi, and most of cfi,
And you'll probably have some left over. Good news is you have your ppl, that's the one that's tough to get paid on. You leaving the 50th?

How much and how you will be reimbursed depends on what type of institution you do flight training through.

Accredited colleges vs. just a Part 141 flight school will be very different.

Does the college you are working with do flight training? May be best to do it through them.

If not, then luckily you are done with private. When using VA through a flight school it will not cover private and you must do part 141 programs.

If you go through just a flight school (vice college), the VA counts every $10,000 spent as 12 months of benefits. If you haven't tapped into your benefits yet, then you would get $30K in benefits for the 36 months. If I remember correctly, it is all done after the fact as well. You pay for the training, submit receipts and then get a check once it is approved.

I would double check with the VA to make sure the "equation" hasn't changed. This was almost two years ago when I looked into it. I planned to spend about $6-8K on a couple of ratings, but decided I didn't want to give up 8-10 months of benefits as I am passing my benefit to my oldest starting college soon.

Good luck,
Heed

@Jato leaving the 52nd out of Colo Springs. @kingsnake yes the college I attend has a flight school but I am an online student and the college is based out of Virginia and I will be living in California soon. I may be able to find a 141 flight school that works with that college though. @Heed I transferred my GI bill to post 9/11 and they pay directly to the flight school (I used it on my instrument rating) That used about $8000 I believe.

Good deal, stick with it! It's always nice to see fellow center seaters move up front. You'll have enough to make it through cfi. I'm not sure if you're an instructor f.e. or not but it sure will help. And instructing holds and landings are much more fun than the backwards 4!

Hey everyone, I was able to use GI Bill benefits to cover $3000 in FAA knowledge tests and checkride fees. Keep in mind that they deducted this money directly from my GI Bill benefits. They are reimbursing up to $150 per knowledge test and $2000 per practical test. Military equivalency knowledge tests are also covered.
