Restricted ATP
Wanted to get some feedback from the guys on the forum and see what you guys think.
I'm a military pilot (UH60 IP) with 1400hrs RW and just shy of 400hrs FW. I have an RW CFI, CFII and ATP. On the FW side I have a CFI, COMM, INST, MEL and SEL. My question is, if appying to the Regionals, would I only qualify for a R-ATP or be good for a FW ATP without the restriction? I've read FAR 61.159 and based on what it says, it reads like I would qualify for an FW ATP without the 750hr restriction. Thoughts? |
god this sounds like the kind of stuff they ask in the CFI checkride and you're thinking "I'm never going to use this".
To answer your question, 61.159 (4) is the only airplane specific part (4) 250 hours of flight time in an airplane as a pilot in command, or as second in command performing the duties of pilot in command while under the supervision of a pilot in command, or any combination thereof, which includes at least— (i) 100 hours of cross-country flight time; and (ii) 25 hours of night flight time. |
So as long as you meet all the requirements of 61.159 then you qualify for the full ATP.
I forgot to add this section. You will need 25-50 hours multi for most regionals. Good luck! Thanks for your service. (3) 50 hours of flight time in the class of airplane for the rating sought. A maximum of 25 hours of training in a full flight simulator representing the class of airplane for the rating sought may be credited toward the flight time requirement of this paragraph if the training was accomplished as part of an approved training course in parts 121, 135, 141, or 142 of this chapter. A flight training device or aviation training device may not be used to satisfy this requirement. |
PilotBarbie:
Thanks for the feedback. Roger on the multi-time, I have a little over 60 hours of FW ME time. So, from what I've read, looks like I'm ready to eat some Ramen Noodles and commute across the US for work. ;) |

Another question for you smart folks. I'm a Guard guy with my ATP written complete- it expires Feb 2016. If Im in training at a regional and mil leave before I finish the training, then come back after my written expires- what will happen? Will I have to retest, or go through all the newly required training to be eligible to retest?

You need to get your ATP or R-ATP multi before your written expires. If it expires you'll need to take an ATP-CTP course and new written. The cost is about $5k. It would be cheaper to take a checkride in a light twin.
