Log book hours

I am currently in flight training working towards my PPL and I flew with my friend today that has his PPL, am I able to record those hours in my log book or do I have to be with a CFI or be a student pilot?

You can put whatever flights you want in your logbook.

but for the purposes of earning your private you can only count hours
when you were with a CFI (or solo and endorsed by a CFI) because you are not yet rated in the aircraft.

and, technically, if you were the one manipulating the controls, your friend can't log the time either.

I hope you kept your hands off the controls Stets!

Wrong. If his friend is the only appropriately rated pilot in the plane. He is the PIC, and can log those hours regardless of who manipulates the controls.
