Default Minor?

I will be attending Western Michigan University next fall and I will be majoring in Aviation Flight Science. I'm not sure if monotony in something would be smart, maybe something to fall back on.

Majoring in Aviation Flight Science is a very bad decision. At the very least, do their aviation business program and get your flight ratings along with it. Better yet, major in CS and get your ratings in a more inexpensive manner.

Why is that a bad decision?

Because it leaves you with no other education, but aviation. When the aviation sector takes its inevitable dump, you are left with nothing to fall back on, UNLESS you have some skill in another area. Even after 9/11 and airlines just started to comeback, they were hit with the SARS scare in Asia. We had a 747 pilot in our A&P class during that time. Also, what if you suddenly have a health issue and can no longer fly; what's your plan then? I know of 2 guys in their 20's who lost their medical.

Piloting as a degree program is also a stretch. There really isn't enough information to make a degree of it. You end up paying thousands of dollars for fluff courses designed to check a box.

Learn something real and get your flight ratings.

As a WMU aviation alum, I have nothing but positives to say about their program. In a lot of ways, it was better/more thorough than Air Force pilot training. That said, I seriously wish I had at least double majored in business or something else. Keep your options open and yourself well rounded.
