how to transfer FAA to JAA?
 

anyone know what I need to do? within a year or two, I will have all my stuff... (ME, IFR, Commercial and hopefully CFII). What will I have to do to switch over all my stuff from FAA to JAA? (maybe not switch over, but I mean like also get the JAA ratings) so I have both...

anyone?

oh, i'd like to also add that i'm talking not about like a restricted license... i'm saying like xferring everything so that I can say fly for ummm... turkish airlines, or pegaus airlines in turkey and such

IR: Min 5 hours, likely to take longer since its harder to fly IFR in Europe.
The JAA IR is harder than the FAA (tighter tolerances).

ME: training as req. 1h Checkride, easy.

CPL: ATPL examns need to be taken, otherwise about 5-10h will get you there. The main difference is the nav part, at which you will complete the entire plan AND you need to be at the specified destination @ +/- 3 min. This applies to the diversion as well. It is not too hard at all.

ATPL: here is where it gets tough. This is a purely theoretical license. It consists of 14 subjects. Its alot more in-depth than any FAA license i have taken. Its pretty cool though. You will get into the systems alot more and you will learn stuff about, The global weather systems, Celestial navigation, how radio nav systems work and other interesting things. I liked it. Usually people take 6-12 months to complete. I can reccomend naples if you are disciplined and on a budget. Otherwise look into Oxford or bristol university. I went with bristol for the first module and changed to naples for the second module.

CFI: Training as required, quite substatial, i would guess 25h.

All of this info is memorized and could have changed (or be wrong)

I did them, i have EU citizenship, naples is most time/costeffective.

Basically, training as required for each license and then a test. The CPL is a little different. You need to pass the ATPL writtens, in 14 subjects. Its a substantial course and it would be the first thing i would get over with. The rest should be quite simple. As an american you would probably be interested in a distance learning course. Naples is not the best, but it is the cheapest option, And i will suffice. Set aside 6-12 months for the writtens depending on your present knowledge base and work situation.
Oxford and bristol in the uk are allso providing DL-courses but you would have to go to the UK to sit the tests and do the brush up.

Thanks to your info I am now in the process of contacting SAA. They have only like one line on their website regarding JAA training and no pricing or schedule info, but we'll see what they can come up with!!

Joachim, in order to do the JAA ATPL course is it a prerequisite that I first somehow transfer my FAA PPL to a JAA PPL? Yes I have looked into Oxford but wow what a sum of money they want from us!!
