Type Rating

Having been out of the "game" for almost 19 years, I have now started the market research on obtaining my FIRST type rating
I am between the CRJ700/900 or the A320 series
However, the question that comes to mind, is,
Do you need to actually fly the airplane in order to acquire said type rating or are the level C and D simulators compliant with FAA regs.
In other words. Shall i get a citation type and then go for one of the other two or will the sims suffice?

First and 100% foremost...why?

You wouldn't need any time in type to get a type rating. You can add a type rating to a private certificate having never touched the plane. I can't answer the C or D part. I know that a level D you can do all the training in the sim, not sure about a C.

Thanks sgt for you input
so if i understood you correctly, you can take your type rating flight exam in a level D sim WITHOUT having to actually go out on the ramp to fly an actual jet A breathing airplane for your checkride

Airlines issue type ratings in Level D simulators all the time.

If you're considering paying for a type rating save your money.....any interviewer who sees a Type will ask you how much time you have in it if you have no employment at a company that operates the type in question.....0 will not impress them.

See 61.64 (a)(1)(iii).

Do not buy a type rating, it will do you no good and is a terrible value for your dollar...especially if you haven't been flying professionally for almost two decades.

As they all mentioned, this probably is not necessary. Get a BFR and IPC and you'll be good to interview. The airline or other carrier will almost certainly get the type rating for you.
