Simulator instructor requirements

Hello all, I'm hoping that someone might be able to shed some light for me. I had a stroke a few months ago and have to wait for the FAA to approve me to fly again. I hope to be back flying soon, but in the event that I not, I am trying to have some other options. I need some help from my fellow pilots to find out just what I need to be a instructor in a full motion flight simulator (like those used at FlightSafety). I never completed my CFI ratings, so I'm looking at doing my AGI and IGI ratings, so I can at least be qualified to do ground instruction. My question is with the instruction in the actual simulator, does it require a CFI rating, and if so can one be done in a simulator, since I do not have a valid medical and therefore would not be able to do it in an actual aircraft. Also, I know that a ATP can provide instruction for the company that he works for, but at the time of my stroke I was training for my ATP with a local regional carrier, so I do not yet have the ATP either. If I complete my ATP rating would this allow me to instruct in a simulator for someone like FlightSafety without a CFI and would I still need the AGI and IGI. Thanks for any help you can provide, I really enjoy my work and would hate to have leave when I feel I still have so much more to give back to our profession.

I'm fairly certain it requires an MEI (since almost all full motions are multi engine) even at a 142 facility.

Please see 14 CFR Part 142, Section 142.47 for the training center instructor qualification requirements. Essentially if you don't have a CFI, then an ATP and unrestricted type rating in the aircraft being taught will suffice.

Didn't know that, interesting.

Sim instructor requirements are found in 142.47. (If you're going to be an instructor you really ought to be able to dig through the regs.) The only exception is if you are teaching an ATP-CTP. Then you need an ATP with 2 years air carrier experience and if you are going to instruct in the sim the appropriate type rating.

The training center Training Specifications may have a higher qualification than the reg or the TC may have a policy to only hire instructors with certain ratings or experience. You would have to ask them.

Did you read 142.47?

generally, once you get hired as an instructor they will type you in the aircraft they want you to teach. Most likely with a 2 year training contract. They will probably do the same for your ATP. Some schools require the type already. In this environment, with the majors hiring again and lots of instructors wanting that job, the ball may be in your court. Just apply or call to ask their prerequisites. Anyways if you have a ATP and type then you don't need any of the CFI or AGI stuff to teach what you are typed in.
Don't just limit yourself to the "schools". Many airlines hire "pro instructors" to teach in the sims.
