My vote would be, for that money, get a type. I would probably opt for the 737, though the Bus is sought after by a lot of places, too.

I've got plenty of total time, PIC & jet time but I'm only typed in steam guage antiques. So I'm shut out of a lot of opportunities. The type rating will definitely increase your possibilities.

Orient Thai will hire you with a bare B757 type if you show up. You'll have to front an additional $10K for the T&G's that the Thai authority want. The pay sucks and the ships are not in great shape, but you do it to get the time on a big glass plane and leave. Nigeria is OK for the same deal, but again I'd say you have to show up. A friend of mine walked into Buraq in Indonesia with 350 TT and a B737 type, but that was a while ago. Again, he showed up at ops in person. All these guys get a bunch of resumes from people with bare types or just saying 'will you give me a job if I get the type'. Generally they don't get far.

You might see the trend here; the absolute lowest of the low generally hire with just a type, unless you can work in a country with a decent operation that hires turbo-prop people with bare types, like New Zealand (Pac Blue) or, as mentioned previously, Europe.

Hope I'm not repeating others too much here. Good luck with it anyway.
