Default Etihad pilots asked to take unpaid leave

Any of you folks working for Etihad? I saw this article in Reuters yesterday.

Etihad Airways has grounded its five Airbus freighters, and is asking its pilots to take unpaid leave as it continues to rethink its strategy, the airline and sources told Reuters on Wednesday.
Etihad is encouraging pilots to take unpaid leave for periods as short as one week or as long as 18 months as it reviews its fleet requirements with the intention of retiring some aircraft, according to three sources.
Etihad has made few comments on its strategy review in which hundreds of positions have been removed and several routes cut since it was launched.

The cracks are starting to show, just down the road in DWC Emirates has a ton of planes parked with nowhere to go. VAT in the UAE and bad T&Cs, beginning of the end!

Etihad faces complex issues in fleet restructuring

Market intelligence revealed last year that the airline has been pursuing a path to dispose of five Boeing 777LRs, 22 Airbus A330s, all its A340s and only a few A320 family members.

The company also wants to cancel or defer a variety of Airbus and Boeing aircraft on order.

Don’t know where you get this, but Delta will never buy a 777 or 330 from Etihad.

Serious question: why not? Just because of the whole open skies/cabotage thing or am I missing something here? Otherwise it'd seem like a sound financial decision if they agreed on a good price.

Those planes will probably have more turds in then than a port-a-potty at a BBQ festival if ever sold to Delta.

Conformity check from a foreign registry is a very expensive proposition. Generally speaking timed and cycled out parts are usually put on the aircraft to be sold.
