Rest In Peace! Truly sorry for the families which will get the horrible news.

“Unrecoverable” I read on a few articles. Looking forward to hearing what really went wrong. Hope the investigation is not censored and hope all pilots and operators can learn something from this to prevent another.

If anyone discovers a better footage, please post also.

Initially rumors on other boards about a midair with a chopper.
Also this airplane alledgedly didn’t fly for two years due to lack of spare parts.
It may have been cobbled together.

The russians could easily deal with something like that in a manner which would not attract global media scrutiny

Even if they wanted to make a public example, they have other ways of doing it. killing a plane load of russians would backfire.

The plane had been flying regularly for almost a year.

I was reading they took off without pitot heat on. Shortly after takeoff they iced up and lost control. Surely the jet has automatic heat on the probes?

Not necessarily. 717/M88/90 are not automatic. Can’t remember if 737/757/767 non-ER were automatic; I think the ER was. That’s why anti-ice is on the preflight checklist and there’s associated cautions if it’s not on.

A Russian pilot blogger said it will chime and light a caution if the pitot heat is not on after T/O. Not sure if he meant when it was broken or if that was with the switch being left off also.
