Never really understood why airlines insist on "running" to the last possible millisecond with the writing plainly on the wall. It's not like the numbers were a big mystery or the date couldn't have been predicted (plus or minus a day or two).

I think the last time I remember an airline that actually wound down it's operations instead of this nonsense was Aloha back in 2008.

There were two white knights lurking who were interested in investing to keep them operating. Indigo partners had a AIP to keep them afloat but pulled out with no notice.

Yes, they were hoping for a bail-out at the eleventh hour. Shutting down flight ops would likely doom any such agreement.

Several had already been repossessed by the lessors in the last week.
WoW sold all aircraft it owned several months ago.

USA3000 wound down its operations over a three year period. They announced in April 2009 that it would eventually be shut down, with operations eventually ceasing in January 2012.

US Bankruptcy laws are different I would think.
