I am considering moving back to the US provided I get on with either UPS/FedEx or another major like DL, UA, or AA.
Following numbers based on flying approx. 88hrs a month.
Yearly flight payments were $180,000, housing $65,000, PF employer contribution (15%) $22,000 : TOTAL AED $267,000.
School allowance $19,700 yearly per child, up to 3 children, this covers about 85% of tuition at an excellent private school.
Provident Fund PF has amassed $600,000 over 15 yrs and I have another 15 yrs of flying till age 65.
I understand seniority and quality of life go hand in hand however for me, I am looking to make as much as I can before retirement. Most US carriers let you fly overtime, drop trips, etc and you have so much more control of your roster (specifically picking up trips that put you into OT). Furthermore 401k contributions are anywhere from 12-16% on your overall earnings for the month.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
One of the main attractions of UPS/FedEx is their Fund A (direct contribution).
The big question is, if given the opportunity to join DL, UA, AA should I go OR should I wait for UPS/FedEx to start hiring again?
Thanks a lot for any sound suggestions.

FO's here make at least that much a after a couple years on property, more on WB's.

Not counting the private school thing, don't know how many kids you have, how long they have left in school. US pilots can afford to live in places with good public schools (free), if you're not hard-set on private schools.

100% of my mil buddies who went to ME3 during the hard times here have returned in the last ten years.

Personally I don't put too much weight on the A fund, but that's a personal decision. I'd rather control the money myself (many folks senior to me lost most of their pension to BK and the PBGC).

Also some pilots are leaving UPS/FDX for DL/UA right now, so I think the cycle has come around with top pax airlines being most desirable right now.

I make more than that left seat ULCC with the only difference being that I only work two day trips and am home in my own bed 22 days a month (work mostly day turns) +15% DC. With wife and young kids I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

Unless you enjoy that special type of fatigue EK trips give you I would probably skip UPS and FedEx right now but that’s absolutely personal. Especially if you are in your 50s. I am in my 30s and I don’t miss that type of flying. I want to be home by day 2 and don’t feel all jacked up especially at this income level.. Always someone making more somewhere.

Everyone their contracts are only getting better and better right now thanks to all the pattern bargaining. I would go where you and your family want to live and what will provide you with the best QOL (as in don’t commute ). All majors are pretty close as far as work rules and things are getting better and better for now knock on wood for all of us.

Former EK here. I mostly enjoyed my 3 years there. Left for a job with Hawaiian just over 8 years ago. While EK was a solid gig, QOL-wise there’s no comparison between EK and any of the legacies. Even while on reserve (which doesn’t last long these days), at HA we have pretty much full control over our schedules. I assume the other legacies are similar. Can’t speak to FedEx/UPS/ULCCs; but I would imagine any of those are significantly better too as far as QOL.

If money is your main motivator, which it sounds like it is, it’s a no brainer. Upgrade times are currently short at most of the legacies. Our current junior upgrade is under a year on the 717. First year 717 captain pay is higher then your current pay at EK. And those guys are home every day. As a captain on the A321, my total compensation will be well over 400K. I can hold widebody captain but am enjoying the mellow narrowbody schedule too much to bid over. When I do bid over, compensation will easily exceed 500K. It’s a similar environment at all the legacies right now. I’m not sure how long this short upgrade window will last at the legacies; but I would imagine at least a few more years. So again, if money is your main motivator, the sooner you make the move the better.

Personally, I wouldn’t make money the only motivator. I’d chase the QOL. Pick a place you can live happily and fly for whoever has a base there. The money will come. It’s a good time to be a pilot in the US.

I've spent many years at EK now at DL. The pax airlines are hiring ~200/month and each month you wait for FedEx/UPS is costing you dearly in seniority. Don't delay if you want to make the move. The initial and temporary paycut is compensated by QOL and work rules. In my second year I have not worked any weekends or holidays. If I wanted EK schedule and money I could have upgraded in year one. But your family will appreciate you having you home twice as much as in EK. And if you're purely after the money, every weekend they're looking for people to fly for double pay.

It's hard to leave the left seat at EK and the comfort zone, but looking back it's the best decision I've ever made. Good luck!

AED$267K? After 15 years? So US$72K? First year FOs at any ULCC/regional make more than that. Don't walk, run, any US 121 is better.
