Thanks for the correction.

zoee,

What are the working conditions like with these companies? Is it worth the effort to get hired if the conditions are terrible?

The salary for a pilot in china is enough to get a comfortable life, but you must face the curret condition ,China have the lagest population in the world, the life environment is crowd

After living in china for most of my younger life, I laugh at the idea that they are going to send american pilots that do not speak Chinese to live in places where the people speak little engrish. I also laugh at the idea of management thinking anyone would want to go over there and live in the conditions they will be able to afford, might as well have a crash pad in dulles. One last thing, other Beijing, and HKG, and Shanghai, there is not much of a "american" or "western" culture or population. HKG would be great to live in but it's expensive.

We should all remember that when someone says there is a "pilot shortage" in a country, we can't categorically say that they need just ANY pilots. They definitely need captains and TRIs/TREs. Some places do need FOs too, but from what I'm seeing they mostly want FOs they can upgrade real fast to captain...to fill the captain shortage. It seems like the best first steps are getting an ICAO-unrestricted ATPL and a type rating and/or about 500 t-prop time. I think a decent plan is to focus on getting these three things: TR, 500 t-prop or 500 on type FO, and ICAO unrestricted ATPL.
