Cloud Sailor, (or anyone else who might know)

Do you happen to know if do you if you have to have a completed application in hand to get an interviewed scheduled at the road show, or will they schedule it also based on your resume?

Thanks

CloudSailor 05-22-2008 03:42 PM

The completed application was NOT necessary in Denver. The British B777 captain who gave the presentation, and did a very good job by the way, had some forms to fill out for those without the application. The forms consisted of some basic numbers, email address, total time, total jet time. I didn't look at it too closely since I did have time to fill out the app. But yes, I got the feeling that they are in need of pilots yesterday! I believe we could've scheduled the interview for early June!
So, if you have time, start the app and show up with as much as you can, make sure you take logbooks though to fill out the time requirements on the form used to schedule interviews. Bottom line, they will want to schedule your husband for an interview pronto, regardless of application status. You will however, prior to the interview, need to complete the entire app.

Thanks Cloud Sailor,

He had tried to complete it but ran into a hitch on one of his past airlines because it actually wasn't on their list of choices and he couldn't manually enter it. It would not let him go on to the next page, he'll have to ask about that.

Just out of curiousity, did you decide to interview or are you holding off? I'm guessing you are currently at Frontier. If so, sorry they are struggling, would love to see it come out of bankruptcy strong but it so difficult to predict these days.

I ran into the same problem regarding airlines not on the list for the app, but you can put Other, which is in alphabetical order under the list of airlines, then you can manually enter the name in the next field. This should allow you to continue the app. I also ran into not having email addresses and phone numbers for three references who need to be "management or check airmen" I believe. So, I entered the names of the people who will be my references and in the phone number and email fields I just put two dashes, so that I could continue the app. I will finalize it later.

Yes, took the interview for end of July.

Yep, at Frontier. Love it here, also hoping to see us emerge successfully. With oil at $130 and climbing, we'll see what happens in the US....

OK, I have a few more questions. Is the leave taken over two periods or all at once? I understand they only pay for one trip. Is it paid leave? How far in advance do you usually find out? Do you have to be there a full year before you are entitled to any leave? Generally two or more periods. One primary leave period of 21 days maximum and other smaller ones generally 7 days or more.

I feel foolish for asking this one, while my husband and I are by no means big drinkers, we have been known to have wine with dinner. I understand that you actually need to obtain a liquor license to purchase alcohol. Is this difficult to obtain? You need to purchase a liquor license to have alcohol in your home and to drink it anywhere in Dubai. You can buy it in Duty Free (cheaper) or at the overpriced shops in town.

I have read many different accounts and I understand that it may be fleet specific, but how many days off are people averaging a month? There is no average it just depends on how a person bids and in what bid group they are in. The maximum days off is now targeted at 14 and can be as low as 8.

Do most people have two cars, or just one? Depends how long they have been in Dubai. One gets you through the first few years and then a second one can come in handy depending on your circumstances. I understand insurance can be expensive, can someone give me a general idea of what it runs? Cheap compared to the USA. Just come with a 4 year no claims letter from your present insurer and you'll pay 4% of the value of the car. That reduces by 15% per year as the car gets older. Do most people lease or buy?Buy, leasing is not something that is typically done here. Does anyone bring theirs over or is it too cost prohibitive?Yes, but it better in very good condition or you may have some issues getting it through inspection. Just flew with a guy who's car has been denied entry.

Does anyone who has life insurance policies in the US happen to know whether they are still valid abroad? Good question, sure hope so.

I understand the education allowance was recently raised, has that helped off-set the out of pocket costs, especially in the primary years? My husband's parents came straight off the boat from England, so I am by no means opposed to sending our kids to the British schools, any thoughts on the quality and cost of those schools? The new rates are not out yet, they should be within a month or so. Plan on $6000/year/child out of pocket for an American School from grades 1-5. Grade 6 and above has better coverage so it's around $1000/year/child. That does not include extra-curricula activity. You'll have to have your children in Kindergarden/Foundation by age 3 if you want them to get into a British School. Many of the Brits/Aussies actually start them at age 2 in Nursery to ensure a place in Foundation. British schools can be cheaper, but it depends which one. You can research that all on-line by doing Google searches for all the schools in Dubai. Look at Dubai American Academy, American School of Dubai, Universal American School, Jumeirah College, Jumeirah Primary School, Horizon, Dubai College, etc.

How far are most people being housed from the airport? 20 to 30 minute drive

I'm sure I'll think of more questions, I'm writing things down for my husband to ask, but it is one thing to ask the company and another to ask those who are actually employees or residents of the area.

Thanks for the information. Just a couple of points of clarification. For the health insurance premium of $75, is that $75 per family member or total?

Also, do I understand the pay scale correctly, you have base pay, then some flight pay on top of that and then "productivity pay" for hours flown above 78?

Thanks again.

fatbus 05-23-2008 10:14 AM

75 for the family and you are correct on the pay/flt pay

CloudSailor 05-23-2008 04:02 PM

SKMarz,

Did you make it to the Chicago EK presentation?

What did you guys find out? Are you interviewing? What did your wife/husband think? Will you take it if offered? Why/why not?

Just curious.

5. What other specific issues do [women] face?

I thought that was an interesting question and, after scratching my head, put it to the boss. She too sat there scratching her head trying to come up with an answer.

She finally said that occasionally she is dealt with in a condescending manner when doing routine family business. That's about it.

I don't know if it's a "women" issue, but I'd say for my part that being 1/2 a world away from your extended family is the most difficult 'family' part of moving here. As has been said many, many times, you cannot commute at Emirates so you do struggle to keep in touch with family back home.

If you do ever move here, you'll find you will get annoyed with people always asking about 'covering up' for women. If I had a dime for every time I've been asked that...

If you come for an interview, visit to the Mercado Mall and you'll see what a silly question it is!;)

Good luck and good on you for getting lots of info. I've flown with too many new guys who clearly didn't know what they were getting into and are now very unhappy.
