Lufthansa? LTU? Air Berlin?
 

I have a distant relative flying for Lufthansa. I haven't gotten much info from him except for "Lufthansa Cargo is hiring 'ready' pilots". Since I'm older than 28, they wouldn't accept me in their academy. They wanted to hire me as a CFI over in Arizona to help train their hand-picked little brats, but they had no bridge program to get me into the airline. I was told it's the pilot union that wont budge on their age hiring criteria. I told them, no deal.

A couple days ago, my mother (she lives in Germany much of the year) sits next to a Lufthansa pilot on the train. He told her I should just come there with a few thousand jet hours and an applicable type rating and I was in. ???

Does anyone have any hiring info on the German Airlines?

Lufthansa used to have a cut off age of 30, at the time of employment.

Your German has to be proficient enough to to be able to talk about technical subjects. Which is almost a different language in it's self.

And of course you have to have a JAR license and the unrestricted right to live and work in the EU.

My dad spent 14 years with LH and LH Cargo.

Meine teknische Deutch ist eigentlich gutt. And insofar as the JAR is concerned, well, that's my only concern. Anybody gone through a JAR certification program from CFI or early regional level?

My mom is a German citizen and a resident there.

Does your dad have access to current hiring criteria as it may apply to a US pilot?

Do you speak German and have the right to work there?

They have changed around a few things, looks like you no longer need an Abitur...

LH pax operations Direct Entry age limit is 32 + 364 days.

For Cargo and Cityline It used to be 35 (haven't found that number published anymore)
Age 33 and up you'll need 1000hrs Commercial multicrew/multiengine...

Still, no sign of LTU at the above site. But there was at your pilots.de. I speak German great. Sometimes I need to look up a word that goes a little beyond what I was used to growing up, but I speak German with no American accent. However, I guess this means I have to brush up on my German reading. =( Oh well. Es ist am besten.

A friend of mine was hired by LTU recently, just prior to his start date they called him and cancelled his offer so he had to stay here at Etihad. For what its worth heard LTU was cutting back and a number of their pilots are coming here to fly the 340's, 330's and 320's.

Being able to speak German at a proficient level is a good start, although you mention that your mum is german citizen, are you? Without an EU passport you won't have a chance. And to be honest LH can be so picky about who they take, anything less than a German passport will probably kill your hopes.

As far as the JAR exams and license is concerned, it's going to cost you around US$15-20,000 to complete at todays horendous exchange rate and about 8 months minimum. That's if you study like a loony and get all the flying done asap.

LH has always been extremely difficult to get into if you're standing on the outside looking in................

If his mum is a German citizen he should be able to get citizenship through her. I am not sure how true this is, but from what I understand Germany does not recognize dual citizenship and requires you to renounce your American citizenship when becoming a German citizen.

Because LTU was taken over by Air Berlin. Ironically this has caused some controversy as LTU pilot's and crew are union and AB's are not. So hopefully the guys and gals at AB get smart and make the switch over.
