The insight I can give you is to stay in the US, you posted on PPrn I believe and mentioned that you wanted to eventually go back to the US so my advice is to stay. This job is ok for a downturn of the industry but that is not the case right now. Get with a regional with a flow through program or try to get on with one of the LCC's, right now they look pretty interesting seeing that they are growing.

This gig puts food on the table but it will suck all the enjoyment out of flying, right now it's just not worth it.

The move wouldn’t be for the purpose of career advancement. We would go to be near family/friends.

You won't be able to say that nobody warned you.

If living in Japan is your goal, I recommend that you target United and then bid for the trips they have out of
Narita, as I understand from pilots that regularly bid those trips is that they can get them regularly so you can work at a normal airline and still spend the majority of your time here.

Air Japan is NOT a career choice in today's market.
Why isn't it a career choice?

With the growth prospects and retirements numbers in the US right now, Why on earth would you come here? It's just not worth it!

Be prepared to work in a hostile environment where everyone is watching you and anonymous reports about your personality will constantly make it to the office by people who inexplicably don't like you. Asian culture is absolutely horrible to work in.

I spent almost 30 years working in the Asian theater flying for a legacy airline with many many overnights in the big three cities of Japan (KIX, NRT, NGO). I have shared several meals (Teco Teco) with "westerners" working for ANA or other contract carriers and they all seem to enjoy their position. Many have embraced the Japanese culture and most have spouses of Japanese lineage. To say their environment is hostile is a little dramatic.

My personal experience is the culture is respectful, humorous at times and genuinely honest. I have never had a problem with "people who inexplicably don't like you".

I would have no problem living full time or working full time in Japan. It's beautiful country with good people.

Fly safe,

OC

Visiting Teco Teco on an overnight and living and working in japan are two very different things. It is a beautiful country and it is safe and clean but it does have it's not so pleasant side. Foreigners live a life here that is full of cultural implications and that spills into flight operations more often than not.

As I said before it is an ok option for folks for whom their local market is down. But right now I wouldn't recommend US pilots to come work in this market. This company has changed a lot over the years.
