I have checked the last year's worth of threads but, while the questions have been asked before, the answers are not especially detailed.

I am looking into WASINC and flying in China as well, though for a different airline. I posted a similar question last night. No responses yet. Someone must have more info, I will post anything I learn.

I just started with Great Wall through a direct contract; no agency. So far nothing like it has been described on pprune, although I think the poster there had an ulterior motive. I did my CAAC medical with some SQ guy's who were there on secondment and they were all quite happy.

There were a few hoops for sure, and I'd be happy to answer any questions you guy's have regarding the process for the contract (yes it is in English)/licence/medical/english test/ATPL written etc.

I just browsed some of the pprune threads on Great Wall. Yikes! Sounds worse than US Air. Hope things are much better for you then it seemed to be for those guys.

As far as I can tell it was one guy using a number of handles. Take a look at the number of posts and when the dude (dudes) signed up. I gather it was someone either from Transmile ****ed about losing pilots, or someone who didn't get the job; I have seen a fair bit of that on pprune and it's part of the reason I don't bother with it (pprune)anymore.

For me it's so far so good but we'll see. Some teething problems but nothing out of the ordinary as far as new contracts go.

That all said, everybody gets to make their own decisions. It looks like there are a lot of newer prospective contractors out there, and on this board, and I don't blame anyone for being careful. Also, contracting is not for everybody. It can be very much more dynamic than being at a legacy and that's not for everybody. I have read a number of negative thing's about KAL as well, but the guy's I know who have gone have quite enjoyed it and have done well.

Long and the short, be careful about what advice you take either way, and if at all possible get it first hand. These boards are great to a point, but you can only learn so much from them.

If you really want to start contracting then you have to make a bit of a leap at some point; but that's the difference between who gets hired and who doesn't. The contract companies have enough experience, generally, with tire kickers and are reasonably good at vetting prospective new hires.
