Default Foreign Ratings

Does anyone have experience or knowledge of the process to add foriegn ratings to the FAA certificate. Is the process simple or too much a pain to even bother.

Thanks for any info.

You won’t add, convert, or surrender your FAA Certificate. You obtain a separate airman certificate. Countries around the world have their own unique requirements. As a summary, you will need to:

Present your log books for review. Be prepared to be without your log book for upwards of two weeks, depending where you are seeking a foreign certificate.

Submit to medical examination which is extensive.

Take as many as 14 written exams for the ATPL. Some countries may waive some exams depending on your experience.

You will have to take License Practical Check (LPC). CAE, and Boeing Alteon can provide assistance with the preparation, and practical exam.

Again the above is an outline of requirements. I recommend you look at some websites for more accurate details. They also have phone numbers so you can talk directly their licensing departments.

UK CAA

Civil Aviation Authority Home Page

Irish Aviation Authority

Irish Aviation Authority

CANSO Civil Air navigation Service Organization

Canso - Civil Aviation Administrations (CAAs)

An alternative is to apply for a validation certificate, usually good for 6 months in duration. The requirements are not as arduous. You still need to pass the medical. Usually two exams are required… Air Ops, and Air Law. The LPC is still required. Again you can contact the licensing department of the country’s agency directly for accurate information.

Hope this helps. Good luck and happy flying!

What is a "foreign rating"?

A B777 type rating is pretty much the same anywhere in the world. You can use your FAA (ICAO) pilot certificate to gain professional flying jobs at most places in the world.

There are ways to convert your FAA pilot certificate to a Transport Canada, UK, JAA, etc. Is that what you want?

I think what he asking is to go from a foreign certificate to a FAA one. To my knowlegde the only way to do it, is the hard way. By taking another check ride with an FAA approved examiner.

Before the check ride, a medical, and written for the rating sought is required to obtain an FAA certificate. It's a lot easier for a visitor from overseas to obtain and FAA certificate, than the other way.

Yes, that is what I understood. It's easy to add an SIC rating, just a paperwork exercise. The actual "type" rating for PIC is a little more involved, but it can be done with just paperwork as well. The approval comes from OKC, but the certificate is issued at a FSDO of your choice. Some FSDO's have refused to issue them, South Florida being one.

Verification of Foreign Rating

There is a short course available from Boeing (don't know if Airbi offers something similar, I would imagine they do) you have to have at least 500 PIC on type and current within the last six months. The course is a self study for the oral and a couple of sim rides and the check ride, one of the guys here found out a while back and I think they quoted him $2,500.
Only if you are in need to have this type on your FAA certificate (an impending job offer) this would be worth it but have it just to have it, doesn't really make sense right now, imo.

Why would you want to transfer your type rating from one certificate to another? Type rating is a type rating especially if it's on your ICAO ATPL.
Like what Dominican said "it doesn't make sense unless it's a job requirement".
