I would work on a figure of about $400 per month. As Bus Canuck says, it's a little weird how they do it. Some places I save a lot of the money, other places I'm out of pocket money.

Bus Canuck and TP, thanks for the info. One other thing I have notices, several weeks ago, I filled out a DEC app online, I got a reply that I'm not qualified for DEC, but if interested, I should change to FO, well the problem is that I lost my referrence number and I have gone on the online website and requested it several time, but have never gotten it. I even tried send Pilot recruitement an email, but got an auto reply that said apply through the online app. I really wish that portion of the PR process would get straightened out. AS of yet i still don't know how to get my referrence number back so I can apply for the fo slot instead. Any suggestions?

I remember I had a similar problem. I ended up starting from scratch and doing it all over again. It's not great software...

Bus Canuck:
Thanks, I was able to retreive my ref number by re-entering my info. Now before I complete the long app, can you give me details on the monthly pay as an FO on the bus, and 777? Also, if my wife and kids decide to stay back in the US, will they have medical coverage, or is the medical coverage only available in Dubai? In your figures, please don't include the perdiem. Thanks again for the info.

Hey man, I don't want to take TP's job!

Nonetheless, here are some quick answers:

-pay is the same on all types, from the 310 to the 777 to the 380.
-after deductions, (medical, provident fund, education, optional interest free car loan) a first year F/O should take home about 16, 000 dhs a month. ($4350). That's not much, but keep in mind you have no home payments or utilities at all if in company accomodations. There's also overtime and I made about 4000 dhs ($1080) a month last year, but it was WAY too much flying and I never asked or wanted it.
-Not sure about the medical, but I believe they'll cover your family to the same cost as in Dubai. I do know that they'll pay education costs for your kids overseas.

Hope this helps.

Bus Canuck,
Thanks, don't worry about taking TP's job, I asked him the same question. I would seriously consider EK, if there was a way to find out for sure regarding medical for my family back in the US. The kids are in high school and pretty well set and I don't want them uprooted, plus they are going to a very good private school. It's great that they pay for schools overseas, that helps, but the big concern is medical. You mentioned they will pay upto the cost in Dubai, what is that cost running? And do you know of any expats that keep their family back home, so I could compare the medical situation? Thanks I know this is a lot to ask.

OK man, you owe me...I actually went digging through the Employee Handbook to get the straight answer.

According to the book, if your children reside outside the UAE for more than 6 months of the year, they are not covered inside their country of residence. It gives a specific example; "E.g. if you children reside in the UK/USA, they are not covered for medical in their home country." A provision is made, however, for children who have a UAE residence VISA but are studying at school abroad. (As an aside, I did learn that the coverage is better than I thought for your family as long as you're a UAE resident.)

I believe that what some guys do is bring their families in, get them a VISA and then send them back home for school.

Anyway, I don't think this is the answer you wanted, but that's how it reads.

Bus Canuck,
Thanks appreciate the answers, I'll be in Dubai, hopefully, if my schedule doesn't change over the 18-19 of this month. If your around and have the time, I'll buy you a round for going through the trouble of digging up the info. Thanks again.

I have been offered a non-flying grade-9 staff position by the EK group. Salary is AED12500/month, housing allowance is AED100000/year and transport allowance is AED1050/month. Rest all are standard EK group benefits. I don't have any prior experience in the airline industry. I do have excellent education from the US (though I am from Asia) and over 6 years of work exp in other industries in the US. Is this a good starting salary for a new manager considering the fact that I want to stay with the EK group for a very long time?

You input will be highly appreciated. Thanks.
