Default Dubai World's debt

I heard a piece on the radio this morning profiling the fallout of DW's debt and how it may be managing to either restructure itself or look for a bailout of some sort. In the piece they said that Emirates maybe sold or acquired. Any news of this over there? If I heard it right, it was in the van this morning and it was loud, they said that Gulf Air may take and interest. But the story revolved around Abu Dhabi and its reaction to Dubai's debt. That makes me think that if anyone, Etihad would be the interested party. Thoughts? News?

Gulf Air scraps routes in restructuring

Gulf Air on Monday announced a restructuring plan intended to stem losses of more than $1m a day and to lead to a return it to profitability by 2012. The troubled Bahraini airline is expected to post an operating loss of about $510m this year, equivalent to 28 per cent of the country’s budget deficit, airline executives said.

“We have two choices for Gulf Air – either we close down this company, or we turn it around. There was no third choice,” said Talal al-Zain, chief executive of Mumtalakat, a government holding company which owns Gulf Air.

Did anyone catch the scripted interview a few months back relating to the financial stability of Dubai? Very funny.

It was tantamount to the scene in Mars Attacks when the martians are pushing a shopping cart with an electronic translator repeating the phrase "We are your friends."

Oh well, I guess indoor skiing, tallest buildings in the world, along with islands of the world are of a greater importance than the responsibility of the ecology and polution to the region.

Hey, if it wasn't for Dubai, what would we watch on Modern Marvels on the Discovery Channel?
