any Emirate's out there?

hi, looking at maybe going to Emirates. I have a lot of questions though.
1. family flight benefits? Extended family?
2. housing, what does it look like? Yards?
3. animal friendly in the villas?
4. are there marital art schools there?
5. how big is the city, do you need a car to get to store, etc.
6. they pick you up and take you to work, correct?
7. after I pay for two kids to go to school, will the money still be worth it?
ANYONE DOING THIS NOW???

I think that about sums up all my questions I cant find online. Thanks to anyone who can help:)

I went to the Emirates road show a few days ago, and will try to answer your questions based on what was discussed there.

1. Yes, family flight bennies. Son / daughters must be under 23, I think. Sons over 19 are not dependents, but daughters are until they are married. I don't think parents / etc get anything.

2. Family housing is a 3 bedroom villa. Green grass in the backyard. Looks like any new housing in California / Las Vegas /etc.

3. Yes, some places allow pets.

4. Don't know, but I'd be very surprised if they don't. There's horse racing, tennis, golf, sailing, ice hockey, etc.

5. City is big-ish (that's a relative thing... smaller than NYC or Paris). I'd say (total guess) that you'd be unhappy without a car. Do you not have a car now?

6. Yes, company car, driven to work.

7. They pay an allowance for up to 3 kids to go to school.

I've applied.

1. Don't need it as you will be very busy flying and when your home....sleeping.
2.They are nice....you don't need a yard in 120 heat....than you have to water your yard....and pay for it out of pocket.
3.oh yes....you will be working and living near many...
4.yes....Jihad school also...they have marital art school...the best in the world.
5.yes you need a car....
6.that correct.
7. NO...NO...NO

FYI...if your unemployed yes take the job since you have to feed your family...if you have a job than think hard...flying 93 hours a month with 8 to 10 days OFF will leave no time for family...

Good luck and fly safe.

ANYONE DOING THIS NOW???

I think that about sums up all my questions I cant find online. Thanks to anyone who can help:)

1) Once a year one free confirmed ticket(Economy upgradeable to Business if space available) each family member back to EK destination in your home country.
Unlimited Cat A (space available tickets). These cost about $500 RT Business Class to U.S. Destinations. Trust me, for a 16 hr flight you're going to want business. Around $250 RT Business to Europe or Far East from Dubai roughly.

2) Single F/O's get two bedroom apt. Married F/O's three bedroom apt. Married with kids a villa. Apartments and villa's vary. I'm happy with my place.

3) Don't know about villa's, some apartments allow pets.

4) Yes, mostly a few Kickboxing and BJJ. A couple are real good the rest pretty weak. Going rate seems to be around 500-550 dirhams a month.

5) If you live in apartment on Sheik Zayad Road near Metro you could actually
make do without car using taxi and metro but still a pain without car. Villa's forget it, you need a car. EK gives you four year interest free loan.

6) Correct

7) Don't have kids so can't answer that. I find that some things are more expensive(food) and some things are cheaper. All in all I think it's pretty comparable to the U.S. But then again I don't have any schooling cost. I'm relatively frugal and manage to save a decent amount of money at the end of the month. But then again I don't go out drinking much in Dubai so that certainly helps, beer's expensive here.

It's a pity that the forum doesn't save threads from a few years ago. I could have pointed you at those as we had some threads on here that were over 10 pages long all about the pros and cons of Emirates. The information has changed a little since then because in the last 18 months we are working our tails off. Current schedules are averaging 95 hours a month. It's promised that will come down to 82-85 by the end of the year, but that remains to be seen. The fact of the matter is the company is trying to get the full limit of 900 hours per 12 months out of each crew member. The fatigue that is causing due to the nature of our flying is not sustainable over the long term. Therefore most pilots here are looking for alternatives.

In regards to school costs, the American schools are the most expensive in Dubai. There are three and they all have websites so you can research them yourself. The American School of Dubai, Dubai American Academy, and Universal American School. The EK allowance doesn't even come close to covering the cost for grades 1 through 5, after grade 6 it gets better. If your wife is a teacher and can get a job at one of the schools then tuition would be free for your children. I know at least 3 people who have done that so they don't have the education cost plus they get the extra income.

Dubai is a biggish city, but the layout is much like a south Florida style where the city stretches along the beach for many miles. The road system is in a constant state of flux due to the rapid development, but it's pretty reasonable compared to many parts of the world. It's the bad driving by many that causes a lot of accidents and fatalities. Also much like south Florida, but worse.

There really should be marital arts schools because the divorce rate is pretty high
