Is there anyone out there that is a US Pilot and works for Air Berlin. I want to get the inside scoop on the following restrictions--
* Must hold valid EU Passport / Citizenship.
* Must have legal right to live and work in Europe.
* Must hold JAA/EASA Pilot Licence and Medical.

I just rode the the other day from TXL-MIA and they sure did have some hotties onboard as F/As

You do understand the conversion process right? The JAA license requires you to pass 14 written exams. Plan on a minimum of 6-9 months to study and take those tests.

As for citizenship in another country. For Europe it might be easy if you have Irish or Italian routes within a generation or two, otherwise it's more difficult.

Oh, and Air Berlin. Do you speak fluent German?

Tyrolean has hired some non-German speakers, but I believe they need to learn German within one year and they already had the right live and work in Europe.

Years ago Crossair was the best bet for a non-European expat to get a shot at Europe, but that boat has long since sailed.

Ryanair would probably be the best shot now.

1. Getting EU Passport: depends on each country, ie. here in Spain, you need to be a legal resident for two years and then you can apply and it takes between 6 an 12 months, but it is relatively painless. How do you get legal residence? Marry a European then move to Spain with said European and reside for two years. There are also other ways to establish legal residence. If you marry a spaniard and move to Spain, you can apply for citizenship after one year of residence. There are other ways to qualify for citizenship, for example if one of your parents is Spanish, you were born in Spain and you reach 18 years old.

I think the rule in the UK is 7 years of legal residence to apply for citizenship (don't quote me), but like I said every country is different.

2. No, Air Berlin won't convert your license to a JAA/EASA license. I just finished the conversion and it took me just under a year and over $15000.

But just to add, after you finish the 14 exams, there is a requirement of 15 hrs minimum instrument instruction IN European airspace plus the instrument checkride and CPL checkride, and if you don't have 500+ hrs on a multicrew aircraft, you also need to do a CRM course called MCC (costs €1700 to €7000)

Ryanair still requires you to have your JAA license (they won't convert if for you), in fact, they charge £300 for their job interview and €30,000 for the type rating. And getting legal right to work and live is on your own.

Yes I understand the process and I won't be going through that long process. I don't have the time or the money. Yes I speak fluent German. So your telling me that Air Berlin won't train me to JAA Standards and convert my license for me, that's crazy of them. zondaracer are you a American? Yes I'm married to a German, but I don't want to wait for 2 years in Germany to get the passport to get a Job. I want to be able to pack my **** and get a job as soon as I get there. I guess that's probably not possible???? Yes I do have a ATP and Prior Airline experience on the jet. I don't have the time to wait 7 years for citizenship. Is there any faster way. What do you do for 6-12 months while you wait since you can't fly?

I'm a American and married to a German. Is there any possible way for me to get hired by Air Berlin or Swiss Air and move to Europe and start training right away without a wait???
