Guys, I'm really interested in joining EK, already sent resume and I'm shortlisted. But when it comes to living in Dubai with the FO's salary there doesn't seem to be an agreement on wether it's possible or you will struggle to survive!!!. I'm from EU my kids go to a british school in Spain for which I pay 1200 Eur. a month ( for both). For what I've seen and researched, a british school should be covered by Emirates allowance plus I ( if I make It) should get a villa too, so I should be making around 6000 Eur. to "spend" and save, am I right? I'm I missing something? I think that with 6000 Eur I should have a good life for my family. I'm not into driving a Porsche, buying a boat, playing golf and going out every day but I still think we should be able to have a little fun with the kids every now and then and save a good money.
Am I missing something??
Thanks to all married guys from EK for your answers...... and those not married too.

By the way I've been reading about Emirates card benefits and the Emirates Pilot Club benefits, could someone explain a little more about them? Do the really help you save a reasonable amount of money?
Thanks again.

I used an online compound interest calculator and ran two sets of numbers over ten years at 5% interest:

1) if you invest $48,000/year at 5% interest, you will have roughly $700,000 after ten years.

2) if you invest $36,000/year at 5% interest, you will have roughly $525,000 after ten years.

These numbers are $4,000 and $3,000/month respectively.

If you're an FO with two children in school, it is realistic to achieve either of those savings targets. It just depends on how you choose to live.
Where re you getting 5% from? is this the provident fund rates? The highest I've seen is 1-2%.

The reason you can't find agreement on how 'liveable' the salary is, is that there is such a disparity on how much people need to consider the salary 'liveable'. With a wife and kids, you won't have 6000 euros to spend. You'll have deductions for provident, medical and a few others that will see the monthly deposit in your account generally around 5,000 euros. (probably a bit more than that but if you budget on 5, you won't be disappointed) You will find most things here will be cheaper than Spain.

The Platinum Card and EPC are both excellent deals. Platinum is available to all EK employees, costs around 25 AED/month and will get you discounts of between 20-50% at most restaurants in Dubai, hotels around the world, as well as some attractions.

EPC is run by and for pilots. It costs around 150 AED/ month for a family and will get you membership to many private clubs and gyms around Dubai as well as discounts. That may not sound great but, trust me, when you see what you get, it's worth every cent.
Good luck.

How much can a single person expect for medical deductions?

I still see 5000 Eur. in your pocket as a good chance to save. How much would you say it's reasonable and possible to save spending some money with the family on weekends? Can you tell me the kind of things you say are cheaper than in Spain? I mean are they things like food, drinks? Fruit?
I really appreciate your answer.

Have a look at

Cost Of Living Comparison

Food, cars and petrol are cheaper here than just about anywhere else. You'll pay more for anything with pork and you'll pay a hell of a lot more for alcohol. You can get cheap alcohol duty free or at other places outside Dubai and you can bring frozen meat back from trips (Spanish ham springs to mind)

For entertainment, everything is available here and EPC and platinum make most of them pretty affordable.
