I'm also heading out there in October as well...and being that it's my first time there, I don't know much about what their restrictions are, however there are plenty of sites out there where you can get a monthly/yearly subscription to a VPN service. From what I've read and especially if you want to use any kind of VoIP service in the middle east, you would need to use a VPN service to do so.

Don't know about VOIP, but hotels have Internet, wired or wireless. The Marriott has wired in rooms, wireless in the lounge and lobby. The Address at the Dubai Mall has wireless everywhere. Some our guys Skype there, so it is possible. All credit cards are widely taken, no problem. You can change money at the terminal or widely available ATMs. It is about 3.35 dirams to the USD.

The JW Marriott is close to the EK Training Center and both are 10 minutes from the terminal.

EK is wonderful in business class, very classy. From non-EK pilots I know there, EK is a good deal.

Best of luck to both of you.

Both of the telecommunication companies in the UAE, Du and Etisalat, are government owned, so they block VOIP programs basically to force people to pay them long distance rates. Enter VPN's which almost any Skyping expat uses. It also magically unblocks many blocked websites. There are free ones, but some people have problems with them. I pay $100 a year for vpnaccounts.com and it always works fine.

As far as money, atms are everywhere and most places you can pay with a credit/debit card, although your bank at home may charge a fee for each transaction. Instead of changing money, your best bet is to take some cash from the ATM. The dirham is pegged to the us dollar at 3.67 to 1. 400aed is a little more than 100 bucks.

A lot of the cheap/free VPNs are blocked in the UAE. You need a good one like Witopia to make Skype calls to a phone. Otherwise just do MSN to MSN or Skype to Skype if it's a short trip here.

From what I hear, Match and similar websites are blocked because they're considered adult entertainment.
