Geeze, what a mess! Glad no one got hurt. I'm not a 737 driver, but is 25G35kt a lot for the 73? I've taken MUCH smaller airplanes into at least that amount of x-wind. What is the max demo x-wind?

My carrier's self-imposed limit is 35 knots on a dry runway. The airplane will safely handle much more, with proper technique.

Your statement is valid. However NG operators impose x-wind limits. Winglet and nonwinglet jets carry different limits. There is a futher limitation imposed on runways of less than 45 meters in width.

Not every aviator may be proficient in x-wind operations.

At the end of the day, the world of aviation is far better off without this person behind the controls of any aircraft.

Stick & rudder skills of most of my copilots on the 777 while I was at Air India were deplorable. One of my senior copilots who was scheduled to go upgrade to the left seat of the 737 had no idea what to do when tower asked us to do an "S" turn on approach to ORD. Based on my experience at Air India what I am surprised about is that this kind of thing doesn't happen more often.

Looks like some cockpit footage from this incident is surfacing:

Well, just think how many similar instances without dents or dings go unreported.

Exactly RJS.

I did an interview sim check at SQ (for my beloved Great Wall gig) with a chap in the left seat who had flown as a skipper for Air India on the 777; I checked and he had in fact flown there for a while. Funny thing, he couldn't find the runway. It was a complete balls up, but hey, somebody likely hired this idiot.

Scary. I choose my airlines carefully these day's.

I just read the article. 4.7 ton to get to AUH at an hour and fifteen minutes in an NG. . . from a go around at minimums, not a whole lot of fuel. But lot's of airports in the Gulf, unless at AI they must divert to their nominated alternate. Who knows.

But check out the comments below the main article; hilarious.
