No expats at JAL that I know of. All expats were let go a few years ago. Even Japanese JAL pilots have been looking for work elsewhere. ANA is the carrier that hires expats in Japan. Them and a few others. Go through WASINC, Hawaii Aviation, PARC, or CReW for more info.

The Dominican will know more. That's his area of expertise.

You are thinking of Air Japan, easily confused with Japan Airlines when speaking.

ANA mainline does not employ any expats. Air Japan, an ANA subsidiary operating freighter and pax B767's, does on a contract basis.

I can't claim expertise in any area TP, but of course you are correct, at the moment there are no expats at JAL but I have a feeling that it won't be long (purely speculative speaking) JAL has made a good comeback and in a few places we coincide with their crews, chatting with one of their captains recently he was saying that their load factors were high and that they are short on crews, they have had to bring back guys that have already retired (60 at JAL but can fly up to 65 as per regs) one thing that I believe is going to come back to hunt them is the fact that they got rid of crews out of seniority and by equipment (all the 747 and MD guys for example) when they start hiring new cadets (he was telling me that in 2012) they are going to have a rough time getting people interested after they fired guys out of seniority and the attrition continues due to retirements at the tune of 150 pilots a year, that is why I have a feeling that they will have to go to the expat market for pilots, like everybody else I suppose.

Typhoon is well aware of this, we just casually call everything ANA because it is all maneged from Haneda, make no mistake about it. But of course you are correct, we work for the subsidiary, although we have no airplanes, no training department, no dispatch, no mechanics, you need a magnifying glass to find Air Japan on our ID's
I thought The Dominican was at JAL.
Bite you tongue!!!! the rivalry around here is like the Red Sox's and the Yankees

A couple of companies now training their first groups of pilots, Peach and Air Asia Japan from the ANA side (Peach will be managed under the "umbrella" and Air Asia will have the support of ANA but will be managed by the Air Asia group) and Jet Star Japan from the JAL side (guy defecting from Skymark to go to this outfit) speaking of Skymark, they now hire DEC's up to 60 years old and no time on type, a couple guys that I know went there as DEC's with regional time.

Out of all of these jobs that are currently available and starting up, only Air Japan (ANA group) is on a commuting basis and none of them have bases in the US

Dominican - thanks for the update on the Japanese market - much appreciated to hear what's going on.
Speaking of Japan and news, (since you guys are closer to the action than I am), have you heard of anything going on at NCA? It's very difficult to scavenge any news from any of the forums that I know of...
(I have a lot of 744 time and looking to move on... I've even thought about trying out at your outfit... my wife and I are still weighing out the Pro's and Con's on that one).

thanks !

I got together with some of them last month and apparently they will start taking delivery of the 748 by this year, they will start hiring again as a result and for what they tell me, they will open the opportunity to folks that are not typed on the 74, we didn't talk too much shop that night (one too many Asahi dry pitchers rolling around) I'll try to see if I can get some specifics when I hit the town again, Narita that is because I doubt I'll be getting any intel in Bangkok.

About AJX, be mindful that due to the merging of the passenger and cargo operations, now we are doing most back of the clock, two sectors in the middle of the night with 2 to 4 hour sit in our sorting station in Okinawa, that sort of thing, so quality of life has decreased substantially (the cozy life style we been enjoying for the past 5 years is gone, good things never last in this business) although now we are able to bid for 14 days off in a row (you will be home 12 or 13, depending where you commute to) but now we are actually working for a living, many changes from night to day operations since they are mixing passenger and cargo flights on the same trip and they give you only 24 hours in between, fatiguing and inefficient, the rosters leave a lot to be desired lately..

Do you think it will remain like that?.. or are they just trying out different rosters and seeing the results?

They need desperately to get trip pairing and scheduling software to be able to reduce the fatigue and make rosters that make more sense, to give them some credit, they are making an effort but they haven't reached the inevitable conclusion that scheduling by hand is just not going to get the productivity and efficiency that could be achieved by doing it electronically. The situation with the declining in value of the US dollar is a big issue and the fact that the head hunters are sending emails to anybody that has heavy time is not helping to curtail the attrition that we have been experiencing lately. At least they understand the situation but like everything else around here, the solution will come from Haneda.
