Expat Social Security

Can anyone tell me if a person who leaves the US to work for a foreign company will still get social security when he returns to US to retire? Thanks

If Social Security is still around when you retire and you have the credits:

Social Security credits

Well, IF, as JayRay2 states, social security is still around you will get the benefits that you keep making payments for.

To put my two cents in here, while you are working for a foreign company and being paid by that foreign company you are not earning any credit toward SS payments when you retire. Now if you are working for a crew leasing company based in the US under contract to a foreign company, (ex. Air Japan), then you will earn credit as the company you are actually employed by is the US based crew leasing company.

So in other words, if you are employed by a US company then yes, you still earn SS credit. If not, then no. But you will still be able to get SS benefits when you retire based on what you have already paid in during your past employment in the states.

Not quite correct, I am with PARC which is not a US based company, but I file taxes as an independent contractor and I file every quarter just like a plumber, or real state agent would, you are basically considered as self employed by the IRS, under this filing scheme you can choose to continue your contributions to the SS.

Well, I stand corrected then. Didn't realize you could structure this contract that way. Good to know. Thanks, Dom. See ya out there.
