In a media release, the union points to executive salaries as a good place to start saving money: "On March 31 of this year, Air Canada president and CEO Calin Rovinescu will collect a $5-million retention bonus for remaining in his position for three years."

Here's a thought...instead of tying the hands of the Canadian WORKING public, why not direct that government concern at the reasons why the relationship between labor and management has gotten to this point in the first place? Oh wait, that's right, because no one that WORKS for Air Canada has near as much money in their pockets as Air Canada itself. [note: replace "Air Canada" with any airline that has had or will have contentious relations between management and labor]. And the beat (and beatings) go on :rolleyes:

Vacation plans?! Really? YGTBSM!!! I'm tired of subsidizing vacations with my paycheck. What about the livelihoods of thousands of employees!? These are essential employees, without a doubt. As are transportation employees the world over. We know it, the governments that depend on our contributions to GDP know it. Its about time they start supporting labor rather than kicking it in the b@lls any time some group stands up and wants to be recognized and compensated for the essential contribution they make, not just to a single company, but to the economy as a whole.

Ugh. Yet again, collective bargaining is undermined. It's disappointing to see some of the comments on that page to the effect of "If you don't like your job, go get a new one!" To those people:

"Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out..."

This is quite funny, I just read a bunch of stuff on what Air Canada is looking to do, lock outs etc., and realized that they are just doing exactly what Alan Joyce just did as part of his grand plan to destroy a national icon.

It's like these fools all got together in a room and came up with this grand plan to hose the employees, add 'value' to shareholders by firming up the 'bottom line', and then take that 'bottom line' home for Christmas themselves in the form of a bonus for a job well done; pretty freekin' brilliant if you ask me. It is certainly a good thing we have strong national leadership in Australia and Canada so the average employee doesn't get hosed by management. Oh, wait. . .

Now, if AC can just try, and fail, to set up a long haul premium carrier in a third world country they'll be on their way.
