Awards and plaques mean nothing in the UAE.
They give those out like candy.
I worked for a certain freight hauler over there that received the "Cargo Company of the Year". The following month, the AoC was pulled for about six weeks by the GCAA. Meanwhile the CEO of the company went to the media and denied the AoC had been pulled, when in fact all of the aircraft had been grounded.

I don't work for Qatar so I won't comment on their cabin crew conditions as I am not knowledgeable regarding that.

However, regarding Johann Hari. Would this be the same Johann Hari that was fired from the Independent for making up quotes, forced to give back journalism awards and caught making edits to competitors wikipedia pages?

I am far from a Dubai cheerleader but that article you linked to has long been a discredited hatchet job.

Google reveals nothing about his Dubai article being discredited. Having spent quite a bit of time in Dubai, I don't doubt anything he says in the article and have seen some of it first hand.

Been there probably 15 times over about 8 years all for work, never lived. Have stayed with friends that work at EK on several occasions. Probably a total of several months?

I can't speak for the Cabin Crew across the sea at Qatar, but I can speak of the crew in Abu Dhabi. More than 170 nationalities and as diverse as can be imagined. For some it is their first job ever, others have impressive education/degrees and previous experience. Some come for a few years as an escape and the chance to see the world. Many of the girls want to get married and have a family, and few I've talked to express the desire to continue flying even part time after that happens. They do not require permission to marry, have a baby, or any other life decision. Many of our crew have been with the airline since the beginning and have no desire to leave it. Many have moved into training and management positions. Quite a few cabin crew also moved into roles in safety, operations, dispatch, and some even got selected for the cadet pilot program and are now first and second officers. I flew with a young man the other day who won a new mercedes by setting a record selling duty free on board. Do they work hard, without a doubt. For an entry level job it's a big opportunity for young men and women who come from some very challenging job markets in many parts of the world.
